.

On a flight home to Austin after his 40th birthday, Ian Parker wakes up from a nap to discover, in the airplane bathroom, that he is two decades younger. He returns to his seat and his best friend Mark.

divider-line1

IAN DRIED HIS hands and took a deep breath. He opened the door and practically knocked over the young woman waiting in line. He apologized and hurried past her down the aisle. He took his seat next to Mark, shook him, and lifted his sleep mask.

“Wake up,” Ian said. “I’m having a really bad trip.”

Mark opened his eyes and recoiled. “What the—? Who in the hell are you?”

“What are you talking about?”

Mark shook off his nap and looked around. “You must have overshot your row or something. Someone else is sitting there. What’s your seat number? Do you have your boarding pass?”

“It’s me. Ian.”

“Ian?” Mark glanced up and down the aisle. “Okay. If you say so. There’s no point in getting into an argument about it.” With a look of subdued terror on his face, Mark reached up and pushed the flight attendant button.

“What are you doing?” Ian said. “Don’t you recognize me? I thought I was hallucinating. Tell me I’m hallucinating.”

Mark removed the pillow from around his neck and swiped off his mask. “Let’s let the flight attendant handle this, okay? I don’t want any trouble. Please, whatever you’re doing, you don’t have to go through with it. Think about prison at your age. Have you ever seen Turned Out? Or Oz? Sure, I know it looks hot when it’s Chris Meloni, but this isn’t fiction, young man. You’re on a real plane, and I’m a real person. These things have consequences, and there’s no point in ruining your life before it’s even begun. I’m sure your cause—whatever it is, religious or otherwise—I’m sure it’s a worthy one. Have you been wronged by the American political system? Well, take a number and get in line.”

“Mark, it’s me. Can’t…? Look, I’m wearing Ian’s clothes.”

“And that’s supposed to convince me? You’re wearing jeans and a plain white T-shirt. If they belong to Ian, then what have you done with him? What’s your angle here, kid? Why do you insist on pretending you’re Ian Parker?”

“I’m not pretending.”

“Then prove it,” Mark said.

“I can… I can tell you things I know about you, like your favorite TV show is RuPaul’s Drag Race. You’re obsessed with Robbie Rogers, which I totally don’t get. And you have a dog named Kitty.”

“Practically anyone who follows me on Instagram could know those things. Have you been stalking me? Does this involve sexual blackmail? Because let me tell you right now, I—”

“We met at Jester Hall twenty-two years ago. You live on West Thirty-Ninth Street between Avenue B and Avenue C. You used to have a boyfriend named Troy, but I called him Sparky for no other reason than I thought it suited him better than Troy.”

Marked paused, and it looked like maybe Ian had convinced him. But then Mark shook his head and said, “Still not conclusive. Are you Al-Qaeda? Or maybe NSA? It’s so hard to tell the difference these days. What have you done with my friend? Did you lock him in the bathroom? Is that what you did? Because if you’ve hurt him in any way, I swear I’ll—”

“I am your friend. Why can’t you look at me and see that?” Ian glanced down the aisle and saw a female flight attendant heading their way. He had to think of something fast. He turned to Mark and whispered, “Okay. I didn’t want to go there, but could practically anyone else know you have a thing for twincest porn? Maybe Elijah and Milo Peters? Or the two brothers from Brazil?”

Mark’s jaw dropped.

“I thought that would do the trick.”

King of Rain – Release Party #5 – Location Photos Excerpt

March 13, 2015

Location, Location, Location!

The series name “West Coast Boys” clearly states that location is a big part of the stories. There’s a lot of reasons for this. I’ve talked a bit about the West Coast culture and its tendency to be open-minded and welcoming. I’ve talked a bit about the wilderness access that so many West Coast people enjoy and how I feel that influences and supports us. But there’s another reason that location is important.

Spiritual Connection to the Land

Many young people are feeling spiritually excluded these days. So many religions have turned their backs, or even raised their fists to LGBT people, that the loss of religion is widespread and understandable. I’ve found that getting back into the wilderness has been huge for me in helping me feel connected on a spiritual level to the world and the people around me. When I walk through the forest with my family on the weekends, I call it “Going to Church,” because that’s what it is for me. I always feel the tension drain, my spirits lift, and my heart open once I’ve had time breathing that thick rainforest air.

There are so many deep truths in a forest. Everything is connected and it all works together. Diversity is sacred. Each leaf is a work of intricate art so incredible that I know without any doubt that there is a pattern to everything around me. The West Coast Boys experience this too, even though they live in the city and are always glued to their phones.

Excerpt from King of Rain – Logan’s Pool

Here’s an excerpt about how Logan uses his deep connect with the land around him when he needs to make a deep change in his life.

***
I looked up at the trees, black on either side of the river as they grew up the steep cliffs, and as luck would have it, right at that second, a huge bird flew across the divide. It must have been an owl since it was the middle of the night, and I wondered what the river looked like to him, floating above the world like that. It must be a scar, cutting deep down into the earth. I’d always known it was a special place. I felt… different whenever I came out of the canyon. Recharged, less desperate. If there was a place where I could do this… what? Transformation? It was here.

The water was so clear and clean. I need to get down to the water. I retraced my steps back over the bridge. There was a small secret beach just down from here, and I climbed down the steep path.

Root Staircase 2 to Secret Beach - King of Rain
The roots of the trees and the feet of all the locals that came down here had formed the steep path into tiered uneven steps, like tiny terraces of dirt held in place by the curves of the roots.

Root Staircase 1 to Secret Beach - King of Rain
I slipped a bit, but grabbed a tree trunk and stopped myself from flailing down into the metal fence at the bottom. I went more carefully after that, soaking my feet in the mud puddles that ran along the fence, down farther, until I came out on a great big chunk of rock overlooking the water.

This pool had the weird calm top to it too. The current was running fast and hard underneath, but it made the surface look smooth. I was like that, wasn’t I? Always smoothing over the surface of my face so I never looked upset.

Logans Pool1 - King of Rain
I made my way down the rock—the missing chunks made an almost-staircase, so it wasn’t hard to get down onto the little stony beach.
Logans Pool2 - King of Rain
The pool here was a safe swimming spot. It was cold as fuck, but it got shallow really fast downriver so if you got swept away, you could just stand up and walk out.

There was a little area in front of me that was deep water, though.

Logans Pool3 - King of Rain
Too deep to stand up, for sure. The water was shiny and black, and the trees on the far slope hung down towards the surface. How do you strip off a layer of yourself? Could I shed it like a second skin?

Logans Pool4 - King of Rain

I need to get in the water.

King of Rain – Release Party #4 – LGBT Mentors

March 13, 2015

Hi my dears,

I wanted to tell you a bit about the Cause behind the story, and how that influenced and inspired the series.

Finding LGBT Mentors

After seeing Rick Mercer’s video about youth at risk (post #1), I decided to do some more research on teen suicide and found the “It Gets Better” Project. It’s a non-profit started by Dan Savage and his husband Terry Miller with the goal of preventing suicide among LGBT youth. In 2010, LGBT adults started sharing videos of their own stories, letting young people know how their lives have improved as they’ve gotten older.

Here are ordinary (and famous) people sharing messages of hope specifically for those in dark periods of their lives. Each one is so inspiring to me. This one is from the founders themselves.

EMBEDDED PLAYER

Here’s the YouTube link in case the player doesn’t work for you.

I’m working on my own video for the project, but the West Coast Boys series is also part of this effort. My corner of the world, the West Coast of Canada, tends to be rather open-minded (at least comparatively) to the LGBT community, and I wanted to show hopeful stories of young love unfolding against that backdrop.

Suicide

I’ve been a bit closeted about this book’s suicide element. I think I was feeling protective of my boys. Their story is not a depressing slog through oppression and pain, it’s a bottle of antidote dropped into a poisoned stomach.

Yes, there are dark parts, and gritty parts, but the journey is about building something new, filling up empty pockets with messy sloshing buckets of love and learning how to reinvent yourself when the old you just can’t survive anymore.

“King of Rain” – Blog Party #3 – Steamy Excerpt with Soundtrack

March 13, 2015

WOO! We are at the hot party of the par-tay! Time for celebrating!

Sexual Content

Note: this excerpt contains sex and the book itself has a high degree of male/male hotness.

A fellow writer once asked me (as she cracked the book open), “Will there be bodily fluids?” to which I replied, “OH YEAH.” She was worried, but trudged into the dark anyway (bless her). She came back to me later and said that she found the sex explicit but also emotionally intimate and psychologically satisfying. I carry that compliment with me, because it’s an important part of my work. I don’t “fade to black” because I’m intensely interested in human intimacy. We dismiss sexuality as titillating or cheap / meaningless when it is one of the largest sources of intimacy that we have as adults.

Gay couple watching sunset

How each person navigates intimacy is ever-evolving. Their need for closeness and their physical desires mix with their confidence levels, their family history, their vulnerability and wounds they’re already carrying on their hearts. I don’t believe that any two sexual experiences are identical because we are all unique and changing from moment to moment. So much HAPPENS in the bedroom. Important stuff. Sacred stuff, gritty stuff, and uh, yeah, naked stuff!

Background to this Scene:

Logan is a troubled young guy who has followed a stranger back to his place to let off some steam. He gets more than he expected. This scene is from his perspective.

And then he lay on top of me and asked if I was okay, and I felt myself melt a little more. I wanted to say no, I wasn’t fucking all right and tell him everything. I never felt like that, even with guys I’d known forever.

A new song came on. It was one that had been my theme song for a while, so I knew all the words. “Thirst” by City and Colour was perfect. It was all about being filled with longing, dying of thirst, feeling rejected and alone. It made me feel like he understood me for some stupid reason. Maybe this was his charity-fuck playlist or something. I tried to turn my head to look at him, and I caught sight of a tattoo on his arm. I couldn’t figure out what it was. It struck me how I knew absolutely nothing about him. “What’s your name?” I said.

“Jeremy. You?”

“Logan. Pfft. Nice to meet you.”

He laughed. I smiled and it felt strange on my face. God, how long had it been since I smiled? Leaning over my shoulder, he kissed my smiling lips, and then I was lost again, wanting to dive into him and never come up for air. Kissing a girl had never been like this. I mean, the mechanics were the same, of course, but this was like stepping onto the wet sand and then getting hit by a huge tidal wave. Oddly enough, the restraints felt like anchors that kept me from being pulled too far out to sea. It felt safer that it was hard to kiss him twisted around like this, safer that I couldn’t demonstrate how desperate I was to hold him, to take him or offer myself up like some pathetic virgin sacrifice.

He broke the kiss, and I was embarrassed to feel myself straining after him, looking for more like some blind, starving animal.

“You have a girlfriend?” Jeremy asked. It took me a moment to be able to answer.

“Not at the moment.” That felt more honest than just saying no. How is it that I actually want to be more honest than I could be?

“What happened to the last one?”

“She cheated on me.”

“The whole truth. No bullshit,” he said, but this time his voice didn’t harden up like it had before, and his hands held mine a little tighter, lending me his body as an anchor as well. God, I wanted to tell him, and maybe, just maybe he actually wanted to hear it?

“Okay, I was mean to her. Shitty enough to get her to leave me.”

“Why did you take her on in the first place?”

“She was pretty.” Shit, was that really the reason? I sighed, disgusted with myself. “She made me look good. A trophy girlfriend, I guess.”

“But…?”

“But she wanted to have sex all the time. I hated it.”

“You lost your gold star, then.”

“What?”

“On your gay membership card. You get a gold star if you’ve never had sex with a woman.” He shifted around beside me and pointed at his stomach, and there was this five-pointed yellow star tattooed a little below his belly button. He had lots of tattoos, I realized, but I couldn’t see them as well as I wanted to over my shoulder.

“Who says I’m even a member of the club?” I said, wondering if I’d get the chance to study his body later, look at each part of him in detail.

“I do, and believe me, I’m an expert. You’re in right now, but it’s not my bed that proves it. You’ve been in for a long time, haven’t you.” It wasn’t a question. He just knew, and of course I knew too, didn’t I? Hadn’t I been trying not to know for so long now? Was there really any point in pretending anymore?

“King of Rain” – Release Party #2 – Novels with Soundtracks

March 13, 2015

Read on for Give-Away Details!

Welcome (back) to the “King of Rain” Blog Party!

This post is about how each book in the West Coast Boys series has a Soundtrack, how that works, and how it formed.

How the Soundtrack Thing Started

A big part of my own West Coast experience is the contrast between modern technology and wilderness access. I live in a big urban city, but I also have the luxury of escaping into the forest without too much effort.

As our tech era advances, it’s my belief that we are evolving out of our headphone isolation and beginning to use the tools at hand to fill our lives with communication, community, and art. The proximity of the forest encourages that because it gives us a place to ground out and recharge.

Each book in the West Coast Boys series has its own soundtrack, and King of Rain is no exception.

Most of the songs came to me from my favorite radio station, thepeak.fm, where you can live-stream music, and I’ve also put them together into a playlist on my website, michelefogal.com, so you can get connected with these artists as your interest moves you and listen while you read if you want to. This was certainly the music I listened to as I wrote and edited the story and a large source of inspiration for me.

Diversity

For me, art is about diversity. Books, music, lyrics: they are all sharing and enhancing the diverse human experience. If we can use technology as a tool to spread art, well then we spread diversity too.

My Diversity Wish for You

WARNING: This may sound hippyish to you, but just put on your mood ring and shut up ok? It’s only for 30 seconds, I swear.

May technology give you access to all the stones you need to build your path. May the natural world around you remind you that diversity is an ancient and sacred river where the wise come to drink. And may the songs and stories you choose lead you down to the water’s edge.

Accessing the Songs

You should be able to click on the embedded player and get the song to play. Here’s the song link on Grooveshark in case the player doesn’t work for you. However you access it, the idea is to click on the song, and start reading the excerpt as the song plays in the background. Give it a try!

Track 2 – “Enemies” by Hannah Georgas

Enemies by Hannah Georgas on Grooveshark
Enemies by Hannah Georgas on Grooveshark
***
“Enemies” by Hannah Georgas blasted into my earbuds talking about cuts too deep to mend and making enemies. Is that what me and Sky are now? I ran a little faster.

I thought about the way he’d learned to dance without holding back when we went out together, him with his cute fake ID. God, he was just a sweet kid, and I’d taken him. Yeah, he was in grade 12 and I was only four years older, but they were big years. I’d figured it all out—how to style my hair, how to dress, how to talk, how to smile, when to grind up against someone and turn them on. Had Skyler really had a choice in the face of my onslaught?

And I loved that, didn’t I? The power of knowing I could seduce and take what I wanted? Wasn’t that the best feeling?

I ran harder, wanting to sweat him out of my skin, wanting to stop picturing his smooth skin stretched out on my bed. I hadn’t cared about sharing him. Sure, I didn’t want him to play around without me, but why hadn’t I worried about losing him? Was it because I just assumed he was mine? Some couples played around because their love was so strong that nothing could shake it. That certainly wasn’t it for me. I think I just had this morbid fascination with finding out where his boundaries were. God, what if he’s with a guy we hooked up with! Wouldn’t that just serve me right?

About the Novel

King of Rain is book 2 in my West Coast Boys series, and it is a contemporary Male / Male Romance, set on the Wet Coast, uhh, I mean WEST Coast! Yes, we do get a ton of rain, but the “Rain” title is also thematic.

Themes

Themes include: redemption, authenticity, coming of age, wrestling with your demons, feeling understood, masculinity, vulnerability, intimacy, conquering suicide, restorative justice, pervasive technology, how music can influence life, city experience plus wilderness access, and most of all, love and hope in the dark nights of the soul.

Here’s the link to King of Rain’s page on Dreamspinner

How the Story Started

I thought I’d start by telling you a bit about how this novel got started. I saw this video by Rick Mercer, called “Rant on Teen Suicide,” and it really struck me.

EMBEDDED PLAYER

Here’s the YouTube link in case the player doesn’t work for you.

Of course, I agreed with him: 300 kids lost to suicide every year in my country was 300 too many, but it had never occurred to me that I had anything to offer these kids. I’d had that common helpless feeling in the face of the tragedies of people that I don’t know. Ever since I’ve had children, the news has been really challenging for me to watch. Every person is someone’s child to me now, and I find myself not wanting my desentization back, but also feeling dangerously skinless and vulnerable.

It was inspiring to think that I could affect positive change, or create a moment of hope for someone I didn’t know. Growing up bi was an isolating experience for me, but maybe I could contribute to changing that for people younger than me.

In hindsight, that was when this story germinated in my mind. I wanted to write stories of love and hope for the LGBT community and for all my straight sisters too! I feel strongly that we need triumphant stories that inspire and uplift us.

Question for Commenters:

What are your favourite LGBT YouTube videos and what do they mean to you? I’m hoping for some inspiring content – anything that you find moving!

Logan can’t pretend not to care anymore, as his rage erupts in a horrible act of revenge. It’s impossible to hide his demons, now that they’ve broken loose.

Logan isn’t looking for love, he’s looking for punishment and release, but with Jeremy all three seem momentarily possible… until he learns his victim was Jeremy’s lost love. Logan doesn’t expect forgiveness and knows he doesn’t deserve a real life, but after a taste of intimate closeness, finding salvation alone will mean he has to change, or die trying.

Introducing Rye from Guarding January

March 11, 2015

GuardingJanuary_bookmarkV_DSP

I thought I’d share an excerpt wherein we first meet Rye. This is the beginning of the Prologue:

Rye sat on the little chair in the waiting room, feeling like some sort of oversized gorilla.

There’d been three other bodyguards waiting when he’d arrived, but two had gone in and come back out in short order. The last guy ahead of him had lasted a minute or two longer. A tired-looking blonde had poked her head out as well, telling him she needed a couple minutes.

He glanced at his watch. He was between jobs and didn’t have anywhere to be, so it wasn’t like he minded waiting. This chair, though, was a little on the uncomfortable side. He shifted, the whole thing creaking ominously. It was small, and he was worried it wasn’t going to hold his weight.
You could say a lot of things about him—he was a solid guy, trustworthy, surefooted, and reliable. One thing you couldn’t say? He was small.

He debated getting up and standing over by the window or something, but he didn’t want Donna Heard to think he was antsy or getting cold feet. Reg Storm, who’d given him the heads-up on the job after he’d finished a stint keeping the rock star safe from a stalker, had told him Donna was a real stickler.

A ballbuster, even.

And obsessed with keeping her pseudovampire, crazy-assed-fans-sending-blood-in-the-mail singer alive.

It was a good thing he liked a challenge and didn’t judge.

He shifted, and the chair creaked alarmingly again. Okay, he was standing. Looking like he was restless had to be better than breaking the damn chair.

The door opened about the same time his ass left the chair. “Sorry for the delay. I had a phone call. Please, come in.”

“No worries, I’m sure you’re very busy.” He held out his hand. “I’m Rye Sommers.”

“Donna Heard. Pleased.” The office was classy, furnished with heavy, overstuffed furniture, way more solid than the stuff in the waiting area. “Have a seat.”

“Thank you.” He sat, nothing creaking or shifting in warning. Oh, thank God. That was just… ridiculous.

“Sorry about the tiny chairs out there. You’re… a big guy.”

That had him chuckling. “You did nearly have firewood there. Big is what you need, though, right?” Little guys weren’t bodyguards.

“Absolutely. And LJ is… challenging.” She leaned back, steepled her fingers, and was completely in control.

“Challenging? I’m good with challenges. Can you be more specific?” He knew LJ stood for Lord January. Lord. January. He’d seen pictures of the guy too. Skinny, tattoos, piercings, and makeup. Lots of makeup.

“First, tell me about you. About your specialties.”

“I’ve been bodyguarding for six years. I’ve never lost a client. I specialize in twenty-four/seven care.”

“And you’re comfortable with travel? This is a long-term position.”

Long term was good. It would be nice to have something a little more permanent; he was tired of bouncing from job to job.

“I don’t even have a goldfish for someone to feed while I’m away.”

Did I mention that it’s available in both ebook and print?

Excerpt and Contest

EvertheSameFS

Hey, y’all! I have a giveaway for a signed print copy of Ever the Same. Comment today on any of the posts and I’ll pick someone tomorrow morning (that gives all the folks a chance).

Here’s an excerpt from the beginning of the novel. Audie’s been called up to the school because his kindergarten has been in a fight…

***

Feeling like he was back in kindergarten, Audie went to the principal’s office.

“Mr. Barrack? Go on in. They’re waiting.” Miz Laws winked at him as he walked by, which relaxed him, because, Christ, this sucked. He went into the office, which was a mixture of colors and pictures of kids and that weird sternness that meant business. Dr. Shields stood and offered him a hand. Lord, he remembered when she was the drum major back when his Aunt Shirley was in the band.

There was a tiny little girl—and he meant teeny—sitting next to a dude who had hair like a girl, a dour-faced older lady, and his Grainger, who jumped up, one eye bruised. “Daddy! Daddy, I swear, I didn’t start it!”

“Hush, now. Let me talk to Dr. Shields.” He wanted to snatch Grainger up, but he knew better.

“Let’s all sit,” Dr. Shields said, and Audie fought the urge to point out he was the only grown-up standing.

Feeling chastised, he perched on the other side of Grainger.

They all sat there, staring, before Dr. Shields spoke up. “Now, we all seem to have a problem. Randi and Grainger have been in a half-dozen incidents in the last few weeks.”

“Really? Why didn’t I hear about this, buddy?” Half a dozen? Shit.

“You said not to be a tattletale, Daddy.”

Oh God. He damned near swallowed his tongue. They’d have to talk about information versus snitching.

“I didn’t start it. Not onced. I don’t hit girls, but Daddy! She hit me in the face! Hard!” There were tears there, threatening, and Grainger had that hell of a shiner.

“Now, Grainger, are you saying you didn’t push Randi?” the principal asked.

“She called me a doo-doo stupid-head!”

Did the wee girl not talk? She sat there, her chin set, her bright green eyes flashing fire. Her thin arms were crossed over her chest, and her feet swung in an angry rhythm.

“Name-calling can’t hurt you, buddy.” Was he the only adult with a brain here?

“No, but name-calling is completely inappropriate, Miranda.” That was the dad, just looking straight ahead. “You know better.”

“He’s mean! He told the girls I was smelly and not to play with me!”

Audie looked at the principal. “Am I the only one not up to speed?”

The older lady glanced over at him. “Beverly White. Pleased. My granddaughter has had some… transition issues. We’re sorry.”

“Mrs. White.” He nodded, then snuck another peek at the man sitting next to her.

The guy stared straight ahead, not looking at him at all. Crazy.

“Grainger is usually a good kid,” Audie offered. “I’m sorry about those uh, transition things.” Way to sound like a hick.

“Children, can you please wait on the green chairs while we talk?”

Grainger nodded, squeezing Audie’s fingers one more time. Audie nodded and smiled at his son, pretty convinced his boy hadn’t done anything really heinous.

The little gal stomped out, pure fire in her eyes. Oh, she was a hellion, he could tell.

“Are you going to tell me you’re going to move her again?” That was the dad, and the dude seemed about as pissed as his daughter. “She’s not the Antichrist. She’s a tiny little girl. She still sits in a car seat, for chrissake.”

“No, I think we can safely leave her where she is. I really felt that we all needed to chat, though. It’s clear that Audie here had no idea what was going on.”

“Yeah, no shit.” Audie glanced at the gran. “Pardon my French.”

“No worries.” She winked at him. “She’s not a bad girl. She’s had some terrible things in the last year.”

“And for some reason, she’s targeting Grainger. Has he spoken about Randi at all?” Dr. Shields was trying, he could tell.

“No, ma’am. He’s not said a word.” He snuck another look at the dad. This guy was a piece of work. “It’s not like him to pick on someone who’s having a hard time.”

“Of course it’s not. Randi’s the one that’s the vicious little bitch, right?”

Damn, Mr. Snooty could snap.

“Dixon!”

“What? She’s had a shit life for the last year. She lost one of her dads, she had to leave Austin and her friends and her school, and suddenly she’s the fucking bad guy?”

“Hey, I never said my boy was perfect,” Audie said, snarling a little himself. “He’s managed to get to six without trying to kill anyone, though, so this is new. Back off.”

“Enough. No one is saying either of these children are bad. Randi has a huge number of hurdles to overcome, and Grainger is a shy little boy with a tendency to follow the crowd. Neither of these children have mothers at home, and I was hoping we could brainstorm some ways to help Randi feel included with the others.”

This was ridiculous. It wasn’t his fucking job to make sure this asshole’s little brat felt like she didn’t need to punch his son anymore.

“That’s her teacher’s job, Shannon.” Audie was through with this shit. “I’ll tell my boy to stay away from her. Can we go now?”

“Yes. Yes, of course. Mr. White….”

“I’ll talk to her. If it happens again, I’ll… shit, I don’t know what I’ll do. I’ll make it up as I go along.” The guy stood, and his mom handed him a cane. A white cane.

Oh Jesus fucking Christ. Seriously? Seriously, Grainger picked the kid with a blind dad and a dead….

Wait.

Her other dad was dead. Jesus. This guy was blind, had lost his man, and his kid was a shit? That sucked hugely. “I can try to get Grainger to help. I promise.” He had no idea why that popped out, except this guy’s life had to suck, and because it had been a long time since Audie had met anyone who would openly admit to being queer like he was.

Official blurb: Audie Barrack is in it up to his elbows with a sick calf when his son’s school calls. Seems Grainger has gotten into yet another fight. When he walks into the principal’s office, he’s shocked to find his son has been fighting with a little girl named Randi.

A little girl with one blind dad and one dad who recently passed away.

Goddammit.

Dixon has lost his sight, his career, and his husband. Thank God for his brothers, Momma and Daddy, and his little girl, or he would simply give up. The last thing he needs is for Randi to start trouble at school, especially trouble that puts him in contact with another dad who might expect him to be a functional human being.

Dixon is struggling to live as a blind man, Audie is terrified someone might see he has a closet to come out of, and everyone from the school to both men’s families is worried for the men and their children. Unless they get themselves together and commit to change, neither of them stands a chance.

Night Vision: Excerpt

February 18, 2015

My release party is almost over :(

Confession: I don’t like excerpts and I never read them! So I was reluctant to do an excerpt here. But… I guess some people like them? So for the people who do not care for excerpts, this is an alternative: the pinterest board for Night Vision, filled with inspiration photos, settings and characters and details from the story.

And for those who DO enjoy excerpts, this is from Chapter Nine:

“YOU HAD a dream the other night.” Theron tried to sound causal and focused his attention on a lock of Alex’s hair, twisting the gold and bronze between his fingers. Alex’s head lay on the pillow, half-turned, almost exactly the way it had been a few nights ago when Theron had climbed the tree to check on him. Whatever that dream had been, it was powerful. And sexual. Theron’s curiosity burned.

“Please don’t tell me you were watching me again.” Alex searched his face and sighed, perhaps seeing some sign of guilt. “Theron, seriously, just come in next time. Why are you still sneaking around in my trees?”

“It is my way, Alex. I thought you understood that.”
“I guess. It’s still creepy, though.”
“Tell me the dream.”
Shame filled the room, and Alex squirmed in the bed, burying his face in the pillow. “I really don’t want to.”
Theron laughed, wrapping Alex in his arms and kissing his shoulder. “Come on, my little sexy dreamer. Tell me.”
“Ugh!” Alex groaned, but the emotions in the air contradicted his protest. He was embarrassed, but happy, even a little aroused. He snuggled into Theron, hiding his face. “You were in the shower. I sneaked in and leaned against the wall near the closet, where you couldn’t see me. I started jerking off and fantasizing about you. I heard you moaning, and I knew you could feel it. You knew I was there, and you called my name.”
Theron ran his hands over Alex’s back, encouraging him to continue.
“I moved so that I could see you. You stood under the shower, your hands on the wall, the water running over you. You were so hard. I wanted to make you come with my thoughts. I was sure I could do it. You looked so sexy, your muscles so tight, straining and wet, and it was easy for me. I stroked myself and thought about you, and I watched your cock. The water was hitting it, and you kept yourself under the spray, but I knew my thoughts were really bringing you off. I came, and a second later you did too, all over the shower wall, without even touching yourself.”
Theron moaned into the back of Alex’s head. “Did you come in your sleep? Or when you woke up?”

Illusions – Excerpt – First Kiss

February 13, 2015

Hey Guys, It’s S.A. Ozment here again chatting about Illusions. Let’s look at another excerpt from the book.

*Disclaimer* The following excerpt contains adult language.

Illusions
S.A. Ozment

As Skylar neared the gazebo, he heard something behind him. Immediately thinking it was Emma following him, he said, “I swear to God, if that’s you, Emma, I may….”’
“May what?”
Skylar swung around at the sound of Aiden’s voice.
Smiling, he said, “May… nothing… never mind. There’s a fan who insists on following me around. I thought you were her.”
“Nope, not a fan. And definitely not a ‘her,’” Aiden teased.
“Hum… wonder if I could change that?” Skylar said with a smile.
“What? The fact that I’m not a fan or the fact I’m not a ‘her’?” Aiden asked.
“A fan,” laughed Skylar.
“Keep it up. You are definitely headed in the right direction,” Aiden said as he walked closer to Skylar.
Skylar, whose heart rate started skyrocketing, tried to make himself chill out as he asked, “Want to have a seat in the gazebo or do you have to get back?” He looked toward the house.
“No, I’m on break. I saw you walk off down the path and thought I’d take the chance to follow you.”
“I’m glad you did,” Skylar said with his heart in his throat. Okay, this crap needs to stop. Since when do I get nervous over a little flirting?
Aiden and Skylar walked over to the gazebo. They managed to stay a good distance from each other, as if they were afraid to touch in any way. Once inside the gazebo, Skylar went to stand against one of the beams, setting his drink down on the railing.
“It’s sure is beautiful out here tonight,” Skylar said as he looked up at the moon.
“It sure is,” Aiden whispered as he gazed at Skylar.
Noticing the tone change in Aiden’s voice, Skylar turned to see Aiden walking closer to him. Within a second Aiden was standing directly in front of him. The closeness was intoxicating as the ache inside him magnified and began settling in his groin. Skylar reached out to touch Aiden’s cheek. Very tenderly he began running his finger down the side of Aiden’s jawline. Both men held each other’s gazes and tried to steady their breathing.
Skylar continued to draw Aiden’s face with his fingers as if he wanted to memorize it forever. His finger reached Aiden’s lips and lingered there as the touch of his lips sent jolts through Skylar’s body. Aiden opened his mouth slightly to capture just the tip of his finger in his mouth.
Skylar gasped. He had a hard-on so rigid, he felt like it might burst out of his jeans. Groaning slightly, Skylar leaned down and replaced his finger with his mouth. Grabbing Aiden’s upper lip with his mouth, Skylar moved his lips around until he had completely covered Aiden’s mouth. Instantly, Aiden opened his mouth, and Skylar pushed his tongue inside.
Taking their time, the kiss was slow and deliberate. Skylar pulled Aiden closer to him as he worshipped his mouth with an intoxicating, slow movement that drove both of them crazy. Gasping and straining against each other, the kiss deepened. Aiden moaned as he pushed Skylar back against the pole, the kisses becoming more desperate.
