JurassicHeart_headerbanner

I’m not one to use the word “epic” lightly. This is no ordinary giveaway.

All through January I’m going to be blog-hopping to talk about Jurassic Heart and all sorts of fun things. And at the end of the month I’m going to draw one winner who will receive the whole EPIC giveaway. At the moment, that includes a signed paperback of Jurassic Heart, a copy of Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton (just because), a gorgeous dinosaur tote bag and a whole bunch of dinosaur related stuff.

To enter, just click HERE and drop me a message with your name and email address. I’ll announce the winner on 31st January. (Please be aware that this is a physical, rather than digital prize, and I’ll need your address to post it to you! If that’s not groovy, probably best not to enter.)

Thanks to everyone who came out to play this afternoon – you’re all lovely people and I hope you enjoy the book!

Don’t forget – discount code AnnaBlog is good for 2 days to get 25% discount on all my books, including Jurassic Heart and all Mystery books at the Dreamspinner Press store.

Jurassic Heart – Let’s Skip to the Good Bits ;)

December 27, 2013

JurassicHeart_headerbanner

I like to think that I write across the whole spectrum of gay romance – from properly romantic books which focus more on the relationship than the sex (Cricket), to erotic romance, where there’s some hot sex in among all that romance (Tattoos & Teacups) to gay erotica (Kid Gloves and the Another Way series).

Jurassic Heart falls right in the middle, I’d say…! It’s definitely wilder than Cricket, not quite as kinky as Kid Gloves, although Nick is a power bottom and proud of that. I wanted to write something that had some  of the good bits that we all like so much ;)

I’m actually playing around with a Young Adult novel at the moment which is entirely innocent (at the moment) and it’s a bit strange to me in a way – I’ve always enjoyed letting my characters express their sexuality and be unashamed sexual creatures. In their bedrooms, at least.

The other think that I really enjoyed about this book was being able to take on some of the feedback from previous novels. No, not all reviewers are evil, even if they seem that way to us writers! Coming from a Fan Fiction background, I’m used to getting all sorts of comments back from readers (both good and bad). I like to think of writing as an art,  a skill that you can keep honing and sharpening but never really say is done.

Jurassic is a shade shorter than my other books but a lot pacier – I took an entirely different direction than, say, Cricket, where the meandering style is definitely something not seen often in the genre. There’s also more than one story thread that weaves through the novel, making tying it all up at the end something of a challenge!

All in all, it was something both familiar and fun, and new and exciting for me. I hope you all enjoy it!

Jurassic Heart – museums and dinosaurs

December 27, 2013

In the first scene of Jurassic Heart Nick, the main character, is holed up in his office in the Natural History Museum in London. This is no coincidence. The NHM is one of my most favourite places in the whole world, and if I could have kept Nick there longer (without making the beginning of the book drag) I would have. I hope I captured the essence of the place in those few short paragraphs – Nick jogs down the staircase, salutes the statue of Darwin, then goes through to one of the exhibition halls.

I couldn’t have set the book anywhere more perfect than the NHM, and it’s a fitting tribute to somewhere that provided so much inspiration for the book. Here’s a couple more of my photographs taken there…

And some of the dinosaurs…

IMG_1118 IMG_1114IMG_1112 IMG_1080

Those last two are actually raptor skeletons, and it was SO useful to see them in “real life” to better understand the size of them, the delicacy of those tiny bones, and how the skeletons look when they’re being dragged out of the ground. MJ O’Shea, who did the amazing cover art for me, actually used that last one as inspiration!

Does anyone else share my love of museums? Where’s your favourite one – or one you’d love to visit?

Jurassic Heart Excerpt – Part 2

Time for another little sneak peek…

*

“That was nice,” I said to Hunter, narrowing my eyes. “What do you want?”

“Is anyone else around?”

“No,” I said. “They all left early.”

“That’s what I thought.”

This was weird. Hunter looked weird.

“I know you did that asking around for us,” I said, “but I still don’t trust you. Or like you.”

He crossed to me in two swift steps, caught my face in his hands, and kissed me hard. For a moment I swooned. Then I got mad, mostly at myself, for the way he made me feel. I didn’t want to swoon for him, I wanted to go back to punching him, when everything was simpler and I wasn’t forced to evaluate my fucking feelings.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” I asked, pushing at his chest and taking a step back.

“I thought that was obvious,” he said and licked his lips.

“Are you high?”

“No.”

“Do you have a death wish?”

He smirked. “Definitely not.”

“You can’t just go around kissing people!” I exclaimed.

“Why, didn’t you like it?”

Yes, a traitorous little voice in my head whispered. Yes, I liked it a lot.

“No,” I said.

“Liar. Do you want dinner?”

“What?”

He sighed. “Do you want to go to dinner with me?”

I gaped at him.

“Christ, you’re hard work.”

“I’m all dirty,” I said redundantly.

“Then go change. I don’t mind.”

“Okay.”

Jurassic Heart Release Day PARTY!!

December 27, 2013

JurassicHeart_headerbanner

*throws confetti*

Afternoon, Dreamers, wherever you may be. I’m sat in my cosy living room in a rather rainy, south-westerly corner of England with a massive pile of Christmas chocolate to keep me going over the next few hours.

In true Anna-style I have no idea what I’m doing and plan on winging this to the n’th degree. Expect giveaways, excerpts, me chattering on about characters and settings and DINOSAURS. This is, after all, an epic celebration of Jurassic Heart, which is my NOT-DINOSAUR-PORN novel (more on dinosaur porn in another post) which is released today.

*throws more confetti*

My dinosaur obsession started as a child, when I first visited the Natural History Museum in London (more on that later too). I can vividly remember my parents refusing to let me watch Steven Spielberg’s film Jurassic Park when it was released in 1993 – I was only seven at the time – so I rebelled (ha!) by going out and buying Michael Crichton’s book instead. That was the sort of child I was – I rebelled by buying books. The novel and its sequel rapidly became my favourite books and I’ve re-read them constantly, to the point where I own several copies of the paperbacks because I keep wearing them out.

Jurassic Heart doesn’t have anything to do with Jurassic Park, the title is more of a nod, an homage, if you will, to my favourite book.

So, to start with… what’s your favourite dinosaur? And, your favourite book?!

Sex & Sourdough: Comfort Food

December 13, 2013

Sex&SourdoughFS

I’ve got to duck out for a bit, to run a kid to a doctor’s appointment, but I promised a sourdough recipe! I’ll be back in a few hours to announce giveaway winners and whatnot!

Sex & Sourdough is about finding comfort in food. And sex, obviously. But this is a post about food. One of my favorites is that oh-so-intimidating chemistry experiment/food known as sourdough bread. For a long time, I skipped any recipe in a cookbook that contained the word sourdough. Anything that involved mixing a live bacterial culture in with my food seemed like more trouble than it was worth.

Sourdough, for all the trouble it gives home bakers, has a long history of being prepared over camp fires and stoves, in the wilderness and in frontier cabins during the California and Alaska by prospectors looking for gold. Alaskan prospectors relied so much on sourdough—using it to feed themselves, their horses, and their sled dogs—that those who survived and prospered earned the nickname “Sourdoughs.” After learning that prospectors had managed to make and survive off sourdough bread while living out of wagons or backpacks, I finally decided it might be possible for me to pull it off, too. I must have tried, and failed, two dozen times to make a passable loaf of sourdough bread. Unlike Kevin, I’m not a gifted baker. While I was playing with bread, I discovered sourdough pan cakes are much easier (assuming you can keep a sourdough starter alive) and they have become one of my all-time favorite comfort foods.

So, for anyone out there who’s feeling like a little culinary adventure, I thought I’d share a link with information on creating your own sourdough starter, and share my own recipe for really awesome sourdough pancakes.

Be warned, though, this is a long term adventure. It takes about a week to turn flour, water, and juice into a workable sourdough starter. Whether or not it’s worth the effort depends on how much you like sourdough.

First, delve into the world of kitchen chemistry here… Creating Your Own Sourdough Starter

Awesome Sourdough Pancakes

2 large eggs

1/2 cup milk

1 cup Sourdough Starter

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 – 3/4 teaspoons salt

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

2 tablespoons butter, melted

Step 1) Beat eggs in a medium bowl. Add milk and sourdough starter.

Step 2)Mix together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and sugar; add to the egg mixture, mixing well. Stir in melted butter.

Step 3) Lightly grease a hot griddle. Drop the batter by 1/4 cup onto the griddle and cook until light brown, turning once.

Makes 3-4 servings. (Trust me, you’ll want to double the recipe unless you’re eating them all by yourself.)

Of course, sourdough pancakes aren’t everybody’s favorite. What’s your ultimate comfort food?

Sex & Sourdough: Fun in the Woods

December 13, 2013

Time for another excerpt, I think!

“Budapest?”

“My dad’s cat,” Kevin explained. “When he couldn’t work anymore, he got really depressed. I thought company would help, but I was stuck in the bakery all day, so I got him a cat. She was the fattest cat in the shelter, with this cute little round belly. She looked like a furry little Buddha statue.” Kevin paused and chuckled to himself. “Maybe a big Buddha statue. When we got her home, we found out she was an absolute terror. My dad wanted to name her Pest. I kept calling her Buddha. The names got mashed together and she became Budapest.”

Anders smiled. “A cat named Budapest.”

“She was a monster,” Kevin insisted. “She used to run a circuit around the house, climbing everything possible at warp speed. Our windows always looked like shit because she would run up the blinds, climb the curtains. It didn’t matter what we did. Not now, of course. My dad used to stalk her around the house with a squirt gun to keep her off the furniture. After he died, she mellowed out.”

“Maybe the random squirt-gun attacks were stressing her out?”

“No. She incited those squirt gun attacks. And half the time she would stand up on her hind legs to catch the water in her mouth.”

Anders wasn’t sure what to make of Kevin’s grin. “Sounds like a strange cat.”

s weird, how things work Kevin shrugged, kept smiling, and let his long stride carry him ahead of Anders a few paces.

Afterward they made camp early, a good two hundred feet from the loud and full shelter on Thomas Knob so they could enjoy a bit of privacy and avoid running into Joel if he should look for them at the shelter. Kevin baked a fresh loaf of bread over his own camp stove and used Anders’s stove to heat up a dried beef stew. Kevin signed the shelter log for them both, scribbling Butch in place of Anders’s name.  Anders felt Kevin set his hand at the base of his back while they ate. Afterward, Anders cleaned their dishes while Kevin fiddled with his sourdough starter. Their routine hadn’t changed much, except that Kevin didn’t hesitate to brush up against Anders as they worked side by side, and as the sun set, each casual brush and accidental touch lasted a bit longer. By the time Anders wandered into the woods to hang their food, Kevin’s dark eyes were already glazed with lust.

The moment their food was safely off the ground and the line was secured, Anders turned around and found Kevin just inches away from him. “Kev! Don’t sneak up on people like that!”

Kevin stepped closer, bumping Anders back until he hit the tree behind him. “I wasn’t sneaking. I was just following you. With your ex down in town, I didn’t want you wandering off without me, just in case.”

“I am not a damsel in distress. Besides, I was heading back that direction anyway,” Anders said, glancing around to make sure they were alone.

“After.”

“After?” Kevin nodded, so close Anders could feel the stubble on his chin scratching against his cheekbone. “These last few days have been like one long wet dream,” Kevin whispered, “but you’re always so eager to jump straight into sex. I figured if I cornered you out here, where anybody could see us….” Kevin pulled at the button of Anders’s pants.

“You figured what, exactly?”

Kevin reached inside his pants and freed Anders’s erection. Suddenly the Virginia night air seemed far colder than it had just a second ago, but Anders was hard despite the chill. Kevin kissed him hard, then dragged his tongue along Anders’s lips. “Warn me if a bear or the asshole with the spikey hair sneaks up on us,” he whispered before dropping to his knees.
