Well, it’s almost time for me to go, but I thought I’d give you one quick chance to win that has nothing to do with the twitter contest. If you don’t win now, you can still win the twitter contest that ends tomorrow morning.

I have an excerpt on DSP here: Official His Soul To Take Excerpt. In the excerpt Robert’s best friend Jerry is wearing what outfit in the rain? You have until 8pm EST to get the answer to me, either here, on twitter @CMTorrens, or my blog Sweet Sounds of a Panicked Writer. One random winner will be chosen.

If you don’t win, you still have another opportunity to win.

Tweet the following: I want a free copy of @CMTorrens debut book #HisSoulToTake

Contest will run all day from 5am EST the 20th to 5am EST the 21st. A full 24 hours to get your name thrown into the hat. Random.org will choose the winner and I’ll announce soon after and contact the winner with their prize.

Thanks for putting up with me. It’s been fun, and good luck!

His Soul To Take – Excerpt

April 20, 2011

His Soul To Take by C.M. Torrens

Yep, I’m back again. This time with more treats to tempt you. Here’s a tasty little excerpt from His Soul To Take, available at Dreamspinner Press.

His mind wandered and his thoughts turned to Robert, the attractive dancer in the mock mobster outfit. The sway of his hips and the ripples of his body drifted through his mind like a warm dream. He could almost smell the scent of spiced musk that lingered on his skin. He couldn’t rid the memory from his mind. He reached into his pocket and took out the white rose Robert had tossed to him. The flower remained fresh and fragrant. Perfect petals in half bloom trapped with him in time.

How long had it been since someone had reminded him he was flesh? Reminded him he could want and feel things?

He suddenly had the urge to go see him again and found himself moving toward Robert’s home a few minutes later. Uncertain if it was the call or his own desires, he let himself find his way back toward the bus stop.

Hope. The luxury of such an emotion warmed the soul he’d thought dead. An invigorating yet unnerving sensation that twisted his gut and flooded him with energy. He found himself walking faster than usual, eager to see if Robert would be there. But what would he say if he was? And if he wasn’t, could he risk taking a peek at him again? The memory of bronze skin and white sheets sent a hungry shudder through him.

He rounded the corner to the bus stop. His heart sank at the sight of the empty bench and he looked down the road toward the apartment complex. He couldn’t very well explain how he knew where Robert lived if he happened to run into him there.

Disappointment bloomed. Another emotion that felt alien to him. The sharp sting of fading hope and the drop in his gut gave him a flutter of excitement. To feel again, even if it was such a grim emotion, was a thrilling concept.

Simon?” a voice called.

Death turned at the sound of Robert’s voice. Simon, the name was still a surprise to hear aloud.

He caught his breath as he took Robert in. Curls of dark hair falling around his face and eyes so alive with joy and life.

An unexpected surge of want seeped into his bones. To see him, touch him, to enjoy every inch of him. A knowing smile rippled across Robert’s lips, and Death pulled his eyes away.

I was hoping you’d show up here,” Robert said.

The plastic bags in his hand rattled, drawing Death’s attention to the groceries in Robert’s hands.

You left before we could talk.”

Death hesitated. “I had to work.”

Deliveries keeping you busy?”

No busier than usual, but I have deadlines,” he said motioning to the bags. “Would you like help?”

Death took half the bags from Robert and they walked toward the apartments down the street. He barely noticed the buzz of traffic over the excited flutter of his heart.

I’m out of a job for a while. Your place wouldn’t happen to be hiring, would it?”

Death winced. “You wouldn’t want my job, Robert. I rarely stay in one place long and it gets… very lonely.”

You just have to be more outgoing. Make some friends.”

Death said nothing and let Robert lead the way down the hall to his apartment.

Want to come in? You aren’t working now, are you?”

I’m always working, but I have a little time.”

Robert’s smile was infectious. So bright and open. Such expressions never fell on him. Such smiles were reserved for others. A deep ache hit Death. He had a job to do soon. For the first time he was considering what would happen if he didn’t. The world certainly couldn’t be any worse off if that smile stayed in it a bit longer.

Are you okay?” Robert asked stopping outside his door. “You have that expression on your face.”

What expression?”

That quiet, sad expression. You smiled, and then it was gone. I like it when you smile.”

I guess I haven’t had much to smile about in a long time.”

I’d like to make you smile more.” Robert laughed suddenly and pushed open the door. “Too corny?”

Death shook his head and stepped into the apartment, closing the door behind them. “No. Sweet.”

Robert stopped and turned to face him. “You think?”

He was so close Death could feel the warmth of his body. Intense, bright eyes stared back at him. Before he could think to stop himself, he closed the space between them. His lips brushed against Robert’s, soft and gentle, and the bags fell from numb hands. Robert’s eager lips opened to him, begging him to taste, and Death pulled him closer, his tongue exploring, devouring. The scent of him. The spicy splash of cologne mingled with a raw manly musk, so enticing. A deep ache of lust grew, spreading, building. Strong hands pulled him closer. He wanted….

Death gasped for breath and pulled away, stepping back from Robert. Clearing his throat, he took another breath to try and ease some of the hunger he hadn’t felt in so long. This was too much. He had to think.

I should go,” Death whispered.

Turning quickly he opened the door and left before he did something he’d regret.

C.M. Torrens -My First Steamy Writing

April 20, 2011

His Soul To Take By C.M. Torrens
M/M Paranormal

Hi, I’m C.M. Torrens and since my debut novella, His Soul To Take, is live today, I thought I’d tell you a story just so you get to know me a bit.

When I was a kid about 13 or so, I noticed a lot of girls had diaries and decided to give it a try. I started writing about daily personal things, about the things I’d done, the fights I had with friends, stuff like that. When my little brother found out I was keeping something secret and forbidden and started peeking around until he found it. He’d steal it away, read it and try to put it back trying to hide the evidence of the theft.

Yeah right. Good luck there when you leave stuff hanging out of the drawer.

After much yelling and telling my mother, I decided I was going to make his head spin. I started writing steamy stuff about forbidden kisses and touches. Sexual things. Things I shouldn’t know about but had read about in the wonderful land of books.

My first erotic writing for an audience of one.

I left the diary where he could find it and pretended to wander away. I would catch him red-handed and shocked. I would tell my mother and maybe he would be so embarrassed, he’d never read my stuff again. Only that’s not exactly what happened.

I burst into his room and he was there with my diary reading on his bed. I shouted for my mother, yelling about how he had stolen my diary to read my personal thoughts. My dad walked into the room instead.

Where I could tell my mother about such writing and the reason, I couldn’t imagine telling my dad about such things. I waited with baited breath as he snatched the diary from my brother’s hands and looked down to see what I had written.

His face was blank as he read.

My stomach dropped and the heat rushed to my face. I watched his face never once breathing, waiting for … something. I’m not sure what I expected. Horror? Anger? Groundation until the end of time?

My father’s green eyes turned to me and he handed me back the diary. Now, I won’t tell you his exact words, because I don’t think he meant them the way they came out. I blurted out my plan to catch my brother in the act of reading my things. Told him it was all made up and I’m sure my eyes were pleading with him to understand I was NOT the trollop depicted in those pages.

With a thoughtful hum, told my brother that if he touched my stuff again he’d have an ass red enough to light the house on fire. And that seemed to be the end of that.

I was still writing. Always writing something.

About two years later, my dad saw me writing and handed me a book. I don’t recall him saying much about it when he gave it to me. It was in Spanish. About a nurse and so steamy it made my toes curl (then again my idea of steamy was a bit skewed). But it was in Spanish. My Spanish was not the best, but I wanted to read it. Because only dad and I could read more than a few words of Spanish, it felt like a secret.

Yes, my dad read steamy Spanish romances. Yes, my dad. The alpha male of my household (and God yes, he was alpha). That was his secret.

It felt like he was giving me permission to write it. That he knew the difference between the writing and the person.

He’s passed on now, my dad. And I really do wish he would have seen this day. I think he would have enjoyed reading my book and seeing me published. His Soul to Take is a great little novella, and though he might have skimmed the m/m content, I think he would like the story. I thank him for that one book he handed me because its often just the little things that show you much more than words ever could.

His Soul To Take by C.M. Torrens

Debut M/M Paranormal Novella

Available at Dreamspinner Press

I’m so excited and jittery it’s not even funny. My stomach has been twisting all week at the thought of this. Everyone wants to see their books do well. Being my 1st out in the world, it feels like I’ve just thrown my baby into the deep end of the pool and praying it’ll swim.

The dreaded questions floating to my mind make it hard to sleep. What if I missed something? What if everyone hates it? What if no one reads it? But it’s done and published, so someone must have liked it. Right? I mean, I love it, but I’m Momma. I’m supposed to love it.

Well, I have some fun stuff for you today to celebrate the baby-tossing. I’ll be giving away a free copy and generally making a nuance of myself. Why yes, I did say free.

Allow me to introduce, my story, and maybe, just maybe, the baby won’t sink to the bottom of the pool. At least not immediately.

His Soul to Take, is an m/m, paranormal romance novella. Here’s a quick blurb:

For centuries Death has endured his curse. Never seen by the living he moves among them, taking souls to the afterlife he can never have. He stumbles upon Robert, a handsome dancer, who not only sees him, but wishes to know him. Death is reminded of Simon, the man he use to be. Drawn to his human side he intervenes, sparing Robert from a painful death. But Simon has only postponed the inevitable. Robert’s time on Earth is growing to a close. As each moment with Robert becomes more precious than the last, his true identity is revealed forcing Robert to make the one request that may doom his soul forever.

A way to the heart

April 13, 2011

In Detour, Miguel makes Robert some food – both chicken and dessert empanadas. As the saying goes food is the way to the heart…. or is that stomach. I think heart sounds better so I am going with “food is the way to the heart”. I think food evokes many emotions in people.

In my case my fav comfort food is hot cereal -oatmeal, cream of wheat or any of those it doesn’t matter it is about the feeling of comfort it brings to me.

If I am happy I like something with caramel or marshmallows.

When I am extremely happy or in a giddy mood I like to enjoy a slice of cheesecake. (as I am having today)

What are some of the food or foods you like and what are the emotions they bring out in you?

Sparks – Sneak Peek Excerpt

April 13, 2011

A few days ago Sparks – Book 2 in the Something in Common series, was contracted by Dreamspinner Press. Sparks is about Bernard “Bernie” Jenkins and Tomas Rodriguez. Below is an unedited sneak peek of the book.

Sparks by Talia Carmichael
Coming soon from Dreamspinner Press.

Unedited Excerpt:

“What makes you think I can’t dance?” Bernie’s tone was more curious than anything else.

Tomas wasn’t about to admit that, with Bernie being so clumsy, he didn’t expect much from him on the dance floor.

“Just a guess.” He shrugged.

“Assumption based on my less than gracefulness.” Bernie sounded amused.

Tomas didn’t answer. He led Bernie to a corner of the dance floor. It had enough space that he could teach Bernie to dance without making Bernie feeling self-conscious. Tomas turned to him. Over Bernie’s shoulder, he noticed the men at the table had all moved closer to where they were. He frowned.

Robert and Alex were next to each other. Alex made a twirling motion of his fingers. Miguel, Alejandro, Malik, and Hector leaned next to each other, smirks on their faces. The rest of the poker crew were spread out around them, all staring. Bernie went to turn. Tomas caught his hands, holding Bernie facing him. He didn’t want Bernie to get nervous. With the yahoos watching them, he would.

“So show me what you can do,” Tomas challenged.

Bernie stiffened, his pale green eyes narrowing behind his black frames. His lips curled into a sly smile. Uneasiness gripped Tomas. Bernie started to move. Tomas’s mouth dropped open. The gracefulness of Bernie’s movements made it seem as if he didn’t have any bones in his body. Bernie rolled his hips. It beckoned sex. Bernie partially lowered his lids over those captivating pale green eyes. In a slow glide, he moved into Tomas’s body. The height of his lanky frame was a match of Tomas’s own six-three, brawny body. A slender finger lifted Tomas’s chin, closing his mouth. Bernie leaned into the side of his face. His slightly curly, dark brown hair brushed the side of Tomas’s face. Tomas stifled a shiver.

“Aren’t you going to dance?” Bernie’s soft voice sounded much more seductive than Tomas remembered.

Tomas gulped. Bernie’s hands slid around his waist and down his hips. He gripped him and moved against his body. Shaking out of his stupor, Tomas shifted and moved with him. Bernie’s soft sigh tickled the side of Tomas’s face. His cock went rock hard. Pulling back slightly, Tomas moaned as Bernie’s hands tightened on his hips, pulling him back against him. Giving in to his silent demand, Tomas moved against him. He felt the movement of Bernie’s cock. It was a delicious friction between them as they danced. The herbal scent of Bernie’s shampoo and soap surrounded them.

With a gulp, Tomas put his hands on Bernie’s shoulders. Through the cotton of his tee-shirt against his fingertips, Tomas could feel the muscles in Bernie’s shoulders. It was startling to realize that Bernie had muscles. He was so gangly, and wore baggy clothes, so Tomas hadn’t even realized it. Bernie rolled his hips in a motion that made Tomas’s cock jerk and his balls go tight.

Jerking away, Tomas said in a hoarse tone, “Enough of the lesson, kid.”

“Not a kid. And thanks for the lesson.” Bernie smirked.

He walked away, a sway in his hips. His ass looked fuller in his baggy pants. Tomas licked his lips.

Miguel withdrew, then turned and walked away. Robert pressed against the door, locking his knees so he didn’t fall. Miguel stopped at the base of the stairs and looked at Robert over his shoulder.

“Aren’t you coming?”

“You’re gay?” Robert breathed.

“Finally, you’ve got a clue. When you can walk, I’ll be in the bedroom waiting for you.” Miguel flashed Robert a devastating smile that lit up the handsome planes of his face.

He turned and went up the stairs. Robert watched his firm ass go. He’s gay, and he wants me.

What are you waiting for, idiot? Go after him, his inner voice, which sounded like Alex, said in his head.

Fumbling, he pulled up his boxers and pants. Holding them, he ran to the stairs. At the top, he went right to where he knew Miguel’s room was. The door was open. He paused, taking a breath before going inside. His breath whooshed out as he took in the sight before him. Miguel was naked. All that butterscotch skin was looking very lickable. Miguel was sprawled across his big, king-sized bed, his fingers curled around his cock, stroking himself. Enthralled, Robert walked over to the bed.

“Strip,” Miguel said.

Robert let go of his pants, starting to pull them off.

“Slower.” Miguel’s demand stopped him.

He frowned. Miguel smiled, a wicked twist of lips.

“Strip. Slowly. I want to see you. I’ve been waiting for this.”

A common thread

April 13, 2011

Detour is the start of a series called ‘Something in Common‘. The reasons I choose that name are numerous but the main one – common threads. I wanted to explore couples who might seem to have nothing in common and showcase that they do. Finding that other person that is for you is an adventure with twists and turns. When you first meet a person you might say “he/she is so not my type” or “we have nothing in common” yet as you get to know that person you can find that your differences are what makes your relationship work. That just that one common thing makes what you have together work.

Embracing that “Something in Common” is exhilarating and can lead to a lifetime of love. This is what the Something in Common series is all about.
