Random Acts of Promotional Kindness by Brita Addams

Something occurred to me when I shared the link to Jacob Flores recent chat on Dreamspinner’s Facebook page. What if more people shared links to chats, reviews, blog posts, the buy page for an author’s book? Readers, bloggers, publishers, and authors alike, sharing that which is important.

From this thought, I launched Random Acts of Promotional Kindness. The concept is simple – just share, like, retweet, add, follow, comment on blog posts, and otherwise help out your fellow authors. Encourage your readers toward other authors they might enjoy. Share a sale the publisher is having or a giveaway that a fellow author is sponsoring. Send readers to the stops on a fellow author’s blog tour. Readers, send your friends.

How can you help? Offer up guest blog spots on your blog, then promo the appearances. If you read a good book, let your readers know. Readers, follow your favorite authors, talk about their work, spread the word about their reviews and new releases. Even their old releases!

RAPK has a Facebook page, where anyone can post promotional goodies, with the hope that others will pick it up and pass it on. But that’s only a start. Carry the kindness over to your own pages as well.

Writing is a solitary pursuit, but promotion doesn’t need to be. We all know how difficult it is. I hope that we can help each other out, and make it a little more pleasant.

Special Sale – The British Devil by Greg Hogben

January 31, 2013

A few days ago, Becky from sent us this e-mail:

“We’ve created our first Special Event for this book. One of our reviewers has a teenaged son who was assigned by his teacher a year-long project to study something of concern to society. He chose gay marriage. Part of this assignment was to read a novel on the topic. As you can imagine, his mother had quite a time finding an age-appropriate novel that she felt comfortable letting him read, but another author recommended The British Devil and both of them enjoyed it very much.

I’ve posted the mother’s comments as well as the teenager’s review. It does contain some spoilers but that was part of his assignment so we put a warning on the review. We are donating $50 to the It Gets Better Project in honor of this young man’s hard work, and are encouraging others to donate to the gay rights cause of their choice.

The British Devil by Greg Hogben
January 31, 2013
This is the only post for that day, as it is a Special Event.”

We at DSP are extremely humbled and honored that one of our books was chosen for this cause. That is why we are offering 30% off both the e-book and paperback of The British Devil from Jan 31- Feb 3 to encourage people to read it for themselves. All the royalties from this special sale will be donated to the It Gets Better Project.

We want to thank Matthew and for this special event.

The DSP Team.

Open Submission Call – Make a Play: No Losers in the Game of Love

January 8, 2013
2013 Daily Dose – A Story a Day in the Month of June
Edited by Lynn West and Shannon Shell

Dreamspinner Press is seeking romantic short stories and novellas containing themes and settings related to sports of any kind. This can be much more than athletes and competitions. We encourage authors to think outside the box.
Possible examples: A fan who goes to baseball games weekly catches the eye of a hotdog vendor. A physical therapist takes a job working on the football sidelines and falls for the coach. A retired athlete takes a high school coaching job and hits it off with another teacher. A college student joins the cheer team and gets more than just a tumbling partner. A single father meets another while they watch their sons at T-ball. Two players face off first at a cutthroat chess tournament and later in the bedroom. The owner of a sporting goods store sponsors an athlete in a local competition and becomes his biggest fan. A rookie player goes to a near-retirement veteran for pointers in the game, life, and love. The kid who was always picked last for teams in gym class falls for the reporter interviewing him when he grows up to buy a major sports franchise.
Editor’s Note: Because of the packaged nature of the set, all stories need to stand alone. No sequels to or spin-offs of previously published works, please.
Submission Deadline: Feb. 1, 2013 - Please note new deadline. Contract offers will be made by Feb. 20.
Publication Date: June 2013
Daily Dose story length: 5,000 – 18,000 words
Manuscripts shorter or longer will be considered but will have to be extraordinary.
Send all submissions to submissions(at) List the anthology title in the subject line of your e-mail. Ex: Daily Dose anthology submission
