Time Waits Blog Party – Post 5

May 15, 2015

This will be my penultimate post about Time Waits (click the title for links), but I’m hoping you’ll enjoy the book as much as I have enjoyed writing it.

I also hope that you will forgive Dieter his somewhat… colourful turn of phrase. He is one of my special cupcakes. He started life as an experimental character more than six years ago, and like Janos, he was just waiting for his time. Linguist, historian, nerd, and gutter-mouth, Dieter was, is, and ever will be one of my favourite characters that I have created.

I can’t tell you how strange it is having the faintly-sketched templates of two characters, and watching them turn into fully-developed people before your eyes. Janos was interesting, but Dieter… Dieter was something special. Other writers, you can back me up on this – you go in, expecting a character to do one thing, and then they act and react in a way that sends the story spinning and it’s amazing. Has anyone else had this happen? Because it really is a mind-boggling experience, when a plot unfolds before you that you didn’t even realise you’d written.

This was certainly the case for Dieter. Trust me when I say that because of him, this story went very differently from the way I originally expected. I very rarely plot the details in advance, but I always have an end goal. Whether I reach it as intended or not is another story. Thanks to this fella, I ended up taking a wild journey that I never saw coming.

And so, I hope you like my wayward boy as much as I do.

Dieter sounds like a real character :)

What you are saying about expecting the character to do one thing and then they act/react totally different, i heard that same thing by many other writers.
