Exclusive excerpt from Tarnished Gold

March 25, 2013

Marlowe’s is a fictitious gentleman’s club in Hollywood, patterned after the many that existed on Wilshire Boulevard in the 1920s. These clubs provided gay men with a protected place to interact.

I fashioned Marlowe’s a bit differently. This establishment is housed in a building that was once a home. It is furnished elegantly and the owner’s provide a higher class of whore for the gentlemen who patronize Marlowe’s. You’ll have to read the book to find out what Jack’s experience at Marlowe’s was, but here is a taste of the aftermath.

THE incident at Marlowe’s earlier in the year had shaken Jack to his core. The reality that he could approach another man with such cold, calculated intentions had frightened him to the point of celibacy, and he’d even convinced himself that he was above man’s baser instincts.

He’d struggled through Eric taking up with someone else, even through the man making a concerted effort to flaunt the guy, as if to say, “This is what I want, and it isn’t you.”

They’d established a new, considerably less comfortable routine in the house, where each man came and went pretty much as the proverbial ships passing in the night. They spoke little, save for what civility dictated, and the chasm between them had grown deeper than the San Andreas Fault.

Life on the set was the only exception to this rule. There, everything was as it had always been—friendly, professional, and heart wrenching.

To his detriment, Jack had allowed himself to fall in love with Eric, and as a counter, Eric had taken up with several exaggeratedly feminine men, all several years his junior. When Eric allowed one of them to spend the night, their nocturnal moanings spoke of territory claimed that Jack felt, albeit irrationally, should have been his.

Intriguing excerpt. Already I’m sad for him about this Eric, who does not seem good enough for him in any way.
