Relationships 201 – the soundtrack

December 13, 2010

Because Relationships 201 took me so long to write, at one point I created a play list of songs from the era (2001-2003ish) to keep me in the mood and help me stay in Stephan’s headspace. In the end, I ended up creating a version that was even more focused, with one song for each chapter, either specifically mentioned or evocative of the mood in that section.

Here’s what ended up on my “soundtrack”:

Chapter 01 Gorillaz – Clint Eastwood
Chapter 02 Oasis – Go Let It Out
Chapter 03 U2 – Beautiful Day
Chapter 04 Garbage – Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)
Chapter 04 Steve Carlson – Love Me Or Leave Me
Chapter 05 Barenaked Ladies – Falling For The First Time
Chapter 06 Elvis vs JXL – A Little Less Conversation
Chapter 07 Noise Ratchet – Crush
Chapter 08 Shakira – Whenever, Wherever
Chapter 09 Sister Hazel – Change Your Mind
Chapter 10 Nelly – Hot In Here
Chapter 11 Hoobastank – Crawling In The Dark
Chapter 12 Poe – Lemon Meringue
Chapter 13 Frou Frou – Let Go
Chapter 14 Garbage – Androgyny
Chapter 15 Explosions in the Sky – Remember Me As A Time of Day
Chapter 16 Avril Lavigne – I’m With You
Chapter 17 Nelly Furtado – Turn Off The Lights
Chapter 18 Killers – All These Things That I’ve Done
Chapter 19 Kylie Minogue – Can’t Get You Out Of My Head
Chapter 20 Kane – More Than I Deserve
Chapter 21 Christina Aguilara, Lil’ Kim, Mya & Pink – Lady Marmalade Moulin Rouge
Chapter 22 Vast – Free
Chapter 23 Weezer – Hash Pipe
Chapter 24 Cake – Short Skirt/Long Jacket
Chapter 25 Alanis Morissette – 21 Things I Want In A Lover
Chapter 26 Incubus – Drive
Chapter 27 Bon Jovi – It’s My Life
Chapter 28 Goldfrapp – Ooh La La
Chapter 29 Tweet – Oops (Oh My)
Chapter 30 Maroon 5 – Harder To Breathe
Chapter 31 No Doubt – Hella Good
Epilogue Moby – We Are All Made of Stars

As you can see, I have a fairly broad range of musical taste – mostly I like a good beat and/or amusing lyrics. Sometimes I like bad songs just because they’re so funny to me (go ahead, guess which ones those are *g*). Some of the songs were old favorites, and some were totally new to me when I started “collecting.”

How about you? What were your favorite songs from those years?

So awesome that you created soundtracks! I do that all the time. In fact, I publish some on 8Tracks, because I am insane.

As for favorite songs from 2001-2003-ish … probably something no one’s ever heard of. That’s about the only constant with me. :D

I had to ask for help – I listen to the radio, but I’m notoriously bad at remembering the name of the song or the band.

I was surprised at how well it keeps me going and got me in the characters’ headspaces. In fact, i’m thinking I need to do another one for my current novel… :)

It is a good way to get specific atmosphere quickly. And I will always encourage soundtracks! Love them.
