What Lies Beneath w/ P.D. Singer + Giveaway

What Lies Beneath with P.D. Singer

Hi, I’m P.D. Singer, and thanks to my lovely hosts for having me. My latest book, Diving Deep, is a story of second chances between a wreck diver and his dive boat captain. Bobby and Lee have a mystery wreck to help bring them back together.

My own experiences diving led me to reading more books about diving. And being P.D. Singer, that meant I started telling stories about diving with guys in love. I will never have the skills for wreck diving, but I know enough to appreciate what these divers do.

More than five thousand vessels lie sunken along the Outer Banks of North Carolina alone. Bad luck, bad weather, or enemy action can put a ship on the bottom. Thousands more have gone down elsewhere on the East Coast in the 400 or so years since records have been kept. Many of them aren’t marked. Here’s a partial chart of the coast of Delaware, where Lee and Bobby are based.

While those triangles marked “not charted” perplex me (a triangle on a map isn’t charted?) it’s clear that not everything down there is known to us. There’s plenty of scope for mystery.

If there isn’t a concerted mapping effort going on, how do we know there might be something down there? For that matter, how did those wrecks get on the map before geomapping satellites if there was no eye-witness or reliable report?

Fish.

Fishermen find a lot of previously lost ships, just by following the fish. Certain fish like certain habitats. People like to eat the big fish that eat the smaller fish that eat the little fish that eat the little critters that like to live on a reef. Reefs don’t have to be tropical, and they certainly don’t have to be natural.

A sunken ship makes a dandy artificial reef, at least in the opinions of the anemones, barnacles, and corals that will grow anywhere in the ocean they can attach. Even wrecks in cold water will grow a scruffy coat of invertebrates in a fairly short time.  This is the Lana Carol, sunk off the shore of New Jersey in 1976.

Sunken Ship

So if your favorite fisherman is reporting catching the big ‘uns in a certain area, it just might be worth taking a look.

That’s what Johnny Ray Slidell thought, when he passed the map coordinates to Lee Preston.

Join Lee and Bobby aboard the Bottom Hunter. Because Lee’s going to take Bobby out to investigate an untouched dive site. Bobby’s going to put on his fleece longjohns and drysuit, and topple into the water to find out what’s 140 feet down.  He’s prepared to find a nasty old garbage scow—but that’s not what lies below.

Who here has gone scuba diving? Where did you dive? If you haven’t gone diving, is this something you’d like to try? Tell me about it in the comments for a chance to win a title from my backlist.

Check out Diving Deep today!

Blurb

Adventure, danger, passion. A heady mix that only a select few can breathe—and live.

Standing by while his lover tempted fate deep under the Atlantic drove Lee Preston into the bottle. The pain of watching his captain drown in a sea of booze sent elite wreck diver Bobby MacArthur running.

Lee chases whiskey the way Bobby chases adrenaline. The farther apart they stay, the better off they’ll both be. And if Bobby repeats those words often enough, he might start believing them. Now his former partner is calling to his diver soul with the promise of the find of a lifetime. Every crazy chance he takes underwater is safe compared to coming back, but if Lee’s turning his life around, Bobby will haul his gear back aboard the Bottom Hunter.

But not as lovers—yet—and no booze, no wild gambles two hundred feet below. Not even to identify a missing piece of history sunk to the bottom of the Atlantic. Fate has given them a chance to redeem what was lost, if they survive.

But the sea is jealous of her secrets, and the price of her treasures is high.

There You Are Release Party #6 – Sexy Excerpt feat. a Jealous Cody

December 24, 2015

ThereYouAre_headerbanner

For the last post, how about some heat? Cody, being bisexual, is completely attracted to both the masculine and feminine qualities of Phineas. As we saw in the last excerpt, he finds Phineas as Phanny a huge turn on.

ThereYouAre_FBprofile_OptizimedForFeedphineasdragqueen

This excerpt comes several months into their relationship after another Phanny Hill performance at Janelle’s. Cody is beginning to struggle with jealousy and goes a bit caveman on the guys who are swarming around Phanny in the lobby. He retreats to the dressing room to wait for her.

EXCERPT

Ten minutes later, Phinney, aka Phanny, came into the dressing room where Cody had holed up. No one was around at the moment, although there’d been a near-constant stream of queens coming in and out.

Cody jumped up, prepared to apologize for his caveman act in the lobby, his stomach doing a flip at the way Phineas was advancing on him in all his Phanny Hill glory, something dangerous flashing in her eyes. “Phinney, I—”

“Wait.” She—for he could only see Phanny in this moment—pushed the dressing room door so that it was almost closed, then shoved Cody up against the wall, her ruby-red talons digging into his shoulder. Cody grunted in surprise when she used her other hand to grip his cock through his jeans. A wave of her perfume tickled his nose and he hardened to the point of pain. God, she was glorious, her glittered breasts peeking out of her low-cut bodice, her big brown eyes framed by the false eyelashes. She unsnapped his pants and he found it difficult to breathe, even more so when she pulled down his zipper ever so slowly.

The hotness of the moment was enhanced by the door not being fully shut. Cody could hear people walking by and talking as she finally slid her hand under his briefs and took hold of his cock.

God, yes.

She looked up then, pinning him with a seductive glance, her ruby lips curved in a knowing smile. “You like?” she asked huskily, then licked those sultry lips.

“Um-hmm,” he rasped, unable to tear his eyes away from her mouth and that pink tongue. His cock twitched under her hand.

“You’re such a bad boy, scaring away all my men. I think I should punish you, hmm?” she purred, giving him a stroke for emphasis. “But I’d rather reward you, because that was smoking hot.”

“Ok-kay.”

“What do you want? And ask nicely. Phanny’s a lady, you know.”

Cody felt the room spinning as he tried to get out the words, the world having narrowed to the smell of her perfume, the feeling of her warm fingers on him. “Will you… please… suck me?”

There You Are Release Party #5 – Drag Queens + Excerpt

December 24, 2015

Cody finds out early on that Phineas was a drag queen by the name of Phanny Hill and performed regularly at a local drag club, and that Phineas gave up doing drag after Allen died. One of the ways Cody helps Phineas come back to life is by encouraging him to return to performing as Phanny Hill.

I modeled the club Janelle’s in the book after Portland’s drag club Darcelle’s, which I went to a few years back with some other DSP authors. This is Darcelle herself who is Janelle in my book:

Darcelle

Here’s the drag queen version of Phineas from Shutterstock. This is the same model as the cover. Isn’t she beautiful?

phineasdragqueen

I love drag shows! It was fun to include drag in my story. And when Phineas allows Phanny out again, he finds a whole new spark to his life. Cody likes it too. ;)

Here’s an excerpt from when Phineas returns to Janelle’s after four years to perform as Phanny Hill.

EXCERPT

Janelle herself, a regal old drag queen, took the stage. She bantered and told ribald jokes, pointed out some bachelorette parties and other would-be notables in the crowd, and then paused to take a sip of water. “And now, I’ve been savin’ the best for last, chickadees. Because tonight marks the return of one of the fiercest queens ever to grace our stage. It’s been too long, way too long, and I’m overjoyed that she’s here with us tonight. Please welcome back to Janelle’s stage our very own Phanny Hill!”

Cody and friends applauded wildly as Janelle exited and the stage went black. The first chords of Diana Ross’s “I’m Coming Out” accompanied the spotlight illuminating Phanny Hill, a vision in a formfitting scarlet sequined gown and short black hair. She was coming out, all right, strutting the stage in her spike heels, her lips ruby red, her long eyelashes fluttering, glitter in her cleavage. Cody had no idea where the breasts had come from, but it didn’t matter. Phineas had disappeared, leaving sexy, alluring Phanny. And fuck, was she a turn-on.

She sashayed in their direction, her painted mouth lip-synching the song, and stopped right in front of them. Blaine and Gemma had their dollar bills at the ready to stuff into the top of her dress. She leaned down to accommodate them, then slid her hand, with the long red nails, along the back of Cody’s neck, emanating a trace of tantalizing perfume. He lifted his face, and the crowd cheered at their kiss. Then she was off, playing to the audience, while Cody touched his lips and Blaine and Gemma laughed.

Question: I don’t have a good question for this topic, so how about asking me anything you want to know – about me, my writing, this story or my others. Fire away!

There You Are Release Party #4 – Funky Music + Excerpt

December 24, 2015

ThereYouAre_headerbanner

Who Got Da Funk?

Those who have read my stories know I love music and musicians. I’m especially partial to funk and soul music, so I had fun putting Cody into a funk band.

The band Cody travels to Portland to join in There You Are is called Da Funk. I modeled the band after a real-life funk band with the cool name of Eldridge Gravy and the Court Supreme. My husband and I caught their act in Portland a few years ago and were blown away by the sheer size of the band and the joyous music that we all danced to for three hours straight. Here they are below:

eldridgegravy

credit: https://jesselongname.wordpress.com/tag/eldridge-gravy/

The excerpt below shows Cody’s first rehearsal with the band. Sandy, Phineas’s nephew, has dragged Phineas to the rehearsal, and Phineas sits in the back with a book while Sandy joins the band on bongos. What Cody doesn’t know until this rehearsal is that Phineas is a wonderful singer and performer in his own right.

EXCERPT

“Okay,” Blaine said. “Let’s do ‘Funk Train’ next.”

“Who got da funk? We got da funk,” chanted Boze, the bassist.

“Um-hmm.” Creswell raised his horn while Jamie fingered the keys on her saxophone and said, “Let’s do it!”

Dude-Man, the organist, raised his head slightly. An enormous black man with shades and a bandana, he kept his own counsel. Cody hadn’t heard a peep out of him the whole rehearsal, but he was genius on the keys.

“Bueno.” Oscar grinned and started in on a Latin beat.

They swung into “Funk Train,” an original written by Oscar, and soon the garage walls reverberated with sound. Phineas appeared to be engrossed in his book, but Cody spied him tapping his toe and counted it as a win.

At the end, Blaine clapped his hands. “Pretty good. Need the horns to be tighter with the drums. One more time. I wish Clarice and Deena could’ve been here.”

“Who’re they?” Sandy asked, still beating softly on the bongos.

“Our backup singers.”

“Wow, this is a big band.”

“Yep. Okay, let’s—”

“Phineas can do.”

Everyone riveted their attention on Dude-Man, who remained impassive, the epitome of cool.

“Say what, hermano?” Oscar asked, a twinkle in his eye, while Phineas stiffened and lowered his book to stare at Dude-Man.

Dude-Man shifted, his massive hands on the keyboard. “I said, Phineas can do. Backup.” With that proclamation, he sat back on his stool and stared off into space, seemingly done with talking. Maybe he’d used up his daily word allotment, Cody mused.

Phineas had turned a becoming shade of pink. “Oh hell.” He tossed his book aside and, with one graceful movement, was on his feet and heading to the second mic set up next to Blaine, who grinned but didn’t say anything.

Oscar counted off the beat and they launched into the song, Boze laying down a funky bass line and the horns providing punctuation. Cody came in over them with a catchy riff, and Dude-Man filled in the spaces on the keys, while Oscar and Sandy provided a steady rhythm.

Once the vocals began, Phineas opened his mouth and a gorgeous tenor voice rang through the room, blending perfectly with Blaine’s baritone. The band members smiled, nodding their heads and riding the groove. Even Dude-Man was swaying.

****

This is the beginning of Phineas being drawn back into life after his mourning period of 4 years since Allen’s death. Cody soon discovers Phineas used to perform drag under the name Phanny Hill. We’ll get into that in the next post!

There You Are Release Party #2 – Trains!

December 24, 2015

ThereYouAre_headerbanner

Welcome back! Let’s talk about trains because they come into this story quite a bit. Cody has loved trains ever since he was little and his dad used to take him to the train museum. The story begins with him embarking on a cross-country train trip. The train station on the cover is Cody’s final destination – Portland, Oregon’s Union Station, where Cody first meets Phineas.

One strange fact is that all three main train stations of Cody’s trip are named Union Station.

He starts at Union Station in Washington, DC, where his disapproving friend Bette drops him off:

wdc union station

Why is Bette disapproving? Because she adheres to the philosophy embodied in the movie quote: No matter where you go, there you are. She thinks Cody is running away one more time, like all the other times he’s picked up and left. And she doesn’t think Cody will be able to outrun his demons.

Cody doesn’t really listen to Bette because he’s too busy being excited about his trip. He takes the Amtrak to Chicago’s Union Station. This is where he boards the Empire Builder train and also where he meets Sandy Nixon, the young man who is running away to Portland and his uncle, Phineas MacDonald.

chicagounionstation

The Amtrak brochure describes the Empire Builder trip in glowing terms:

Experience the Rugged Splendor of the American West

Traveling daily between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest along major portions of the Lewis and Clark trail, the mighty Empire Builder takes you on an exciting adventure through majestic wilderness, following the footsteps of early pioneers.

Here are some pictures from the Empire Builder Amtrak brochure:

empirebuilderempirebuilderlake

It looks amazing! I’d love to go on this train trip one day. Cody and Sandy become friends on the trip and when they reach Portland’s Union Station, Phineas and his best friend Blaine are there to meet Sandy.

By a romance-tropic coincidence, Blaine just happens to be the leader of Da Beat, the funk band Cody has come to Portland to join! Of course!

Our two heroes start right off in close contact but each of them brings baggage… and we’ll talk about that in our next post!

Life’s Sacrifices by J. J. Lore – Post + Giveaway

November 11, 2015

Lifes sacrifices1

Drumroll please and here it is, my big debut, both as a Dreamspinner Press author and as a writer of m/m romance. It’s pretty nerve-wracking for any author on release day, but with those additional factors, I’m a bit of a wreck right now. My new sci-fi book, Raider Captured, is finally available after what has seemed like months and months of writing, submitting, waiting, and editing. Hold on a minute, that’s exactly how long it has taken. Hopefully all that hard work both on my part and all the talented folks at Dreamspinner will result in an entertaining read for you.

Raider Captured, as the title implies, is, in addition to being a romance and outer space adventure tale, my exploration of the strictures and pressures of imprisonment on both sides of the cage. My initial inspiration for the story was putting two characters in opposition to each other in the most fundamental way; prisoner and jailor. How could I weave romance into such a power imbalance? Both characters would have to overcome many obstacles to eventually place trust in each other and finally discover love. Equally important was having each character empathize with the other’s position. Sagiv, the captured warrior, knows that Daran, his young captor, is facing tremendous pressure to return him for a ransom. Sagiv is certain none of his people would offer up anything for his return as he’s disgraced in defeat. Daran realizes he should feel nothing but disdain for Sagiv, a man who attacked his ship, but he can’t suppress his innate curiosity about the mysterious fighter. There is a connection between them, forged first in the manacles around Sagiv’s wrists, and only strengthened when Daran decides to remove the restraints and free his fearsome prisoner.

There’s always an element of risk when falling in love. Oftentimes we have to give up things we thought were important in order to create that emotional bond with another person. We might have to move, face a friend or family’s disapproval, or open ourselves up to the possibility of rejection. Everyone has to make a leap into the unknown for the chance at romance.

I’m curious about what you had to risk in order to find love. Please leave a comment below for the chance to win a copy of Raider Captured or something useful if you’re ever captured by an alien.

When Chaos Rules How Well Do You Know Those Closest To You? with Elizabeth Noble

September 7, 2015

5468032

Hello and thank you for stopping by today! I’m Elizabeth Noble, author of Shifting Chaos (book 4 of The Sleepless City) which coincidentally released today.

How well do you really know those closest to you? What about how well they know you?

In the series The Sleepless City (co-written with Anne Barwell) vampires and werewolves live and work alongside humans. While humans and werewolves reproduce naturally, and pair bond for love and to create offspring, vampires have mates for a different reason. They live incredibly long lives bordering on immortality. Nature gave vampires the unique ability to bond with one person, their soul mate, for life. Each person in the soul mate bond complements the other. Where one is weak the other is strong.

Vampires can and do soul bond with other vampires, humans and on rare occasions werewolves. Each couple experiences different things and each soul bond is unique. The bonding between two vampires takes place in stages. During that time it’s possible for each party to telepathically see some important, highly emotionally charged memories of the other. Think of it as those Facebook life event highlights for the mind.

Soul mates aren’t the only loves vampires have. Before they meet their soul mate they form friendships and have relationships with other lovers, some for hundreds of years. After a 150 years or so you get to know a person pretty well. You might think you know everything about them. Or do you? Do they really know everything about you?

During the course of The Sleepless City the three oldest vampires of the group, Declan, Forge and Simon meet and bond with their soul mates. One with another vampire, one with a human and one with a werewolf. This gives the relationships they’ve already formed with one another a good, hearty shaking up and dynamics change. Together they are a family and those family ties are challenged to the brink of destruction.

Throughout Shifting Chaos, the final book of the series, all of those individual relationships are strained, tested, and given room to grow. There is the very real threat to one man that the discovery of the deepest, darkest event of his life will leave him rejected by his soul mate and family, an outcast. He’s even managed to hide this event from his soul mate. There is the risk of losing loved ones to death and inner demons.

While writing Shifting Chaos I wanted to show a bit of the past for a few of these men. Two of them have known each other—intimately—since 1821, so there is a lot of history there. Getting ideas for snippets of what they’d lived through and then presenting it into the story was a wonderful challenge for me. I didn’t want to have an overload of flashbacks. In some places I went the route of these two individuals sort of competing to tell the best, most embarrassing, entertaining story about each other to the rest of their family of choice. Doing this allowed me the opportunity to forward the plot and add some humor along the way. Their pasts become very relevant to the conspiracy they face and the disaster they’re trying to prevent in the present.

The fight with demons, inner and otherwise, causes memories and events long buried to resurface. Men who think they know each other so well, find out there is more to be discovered. What they learn is not only surprising, but frightening. How each individual reacts to those revelations is an important aspect of the story. Most importantly they all learn love really does conquer all, and in their case allows for a lot of forgiveness. When you love someone, truly and deeply love them, you take the good with the bad and work it out because that is part of what love is.

What would you do if you discovered some deeply hidden secret about the person you loved most? How do you think they’d react finding out something like that about you?

Everyone commenting will be entered into a drawing to win any ebook off my backlist (Shifting Chaos is excluded from the contest and not eligible for the giveaway).

Thank you for stopping by today and as always, happy reading!

Blurb:

Chaos reigns in The Sleepless City, and it’s really beginning to piss Detective Jonas Forge off. He’s got inner demons to battle and a life to build with his new soul mate, Blair Turner. Nothing is going right, and he already feels the universe is conspiring against him when a turn of events he never saw coming flips his world upside down.

Hallucinations grip the town and everyone in it, threatening to tear their precariously built family apart, and the only way forward is to bare all to each other. This means Declan and Blair need to learn to accept one another. Lucas Coate has to move forward without ties to his werewolf pack and live a monogamous life with Declan.

But while Forge and Declan confront horrors from their shared past, Simon learns a terrible truth about vampires—one he couldn’t have imagined in his worst nightmares.

Excerpt:

Blair had only been a vampire for five years, not nearly time enough to have learned the depths of power he possessed. Or how to really control it. A simple shove to Ben’s shoulder could have shattered bone and sent him flying. Fortunately Simon intervened, catching Ben around the waist and dragging him away at high speed before Blair could
touch him.

Simon whirled around, putting himself in front of Ben and Blair and shielding them from Forge. For a split second, his eyes were deep, dark brown with no whites or iris visible.

Declan stood at the bottom of the steps, fists clenched. He didn’t say a word, but he didn’t have to. It sucked knowing someone that well. Forge could still tell what Declan was thinking. Yet the memory that surfaced surrounding those killings so long ago were events Forge had never told Declan, or anyone, about. It had been hidden even from Blair,
it was so deeply buried in Forge’s subconscious. So how did Declan know? How could he possibly know?
It was Declan who finally ushered them up the steps—Simon, Ben, and Blair first—muttering, “I go out for twenty minutes to pick up pizza, and everyone goes nuts.”

When Declan glanced over his shoulder and nodded at Lucas, he reached down and took Forge’s arm to help him up.

“What happened? What did I do?” Forge asked.

Lucas pulled him into a hug. “Nothing. You yelled. Knocked some furniture over and scared the crap out of Blair and Moose. And me.”

When Lucas leaned back, holding Forge by the shoulders, Forge noticed for the first time Lucas’s clothes were ripped and his jeans had split, but not enough that they fell off him. He must have mostly transformed to get control of Forge.

“Where’s Moose?” Forge looked around. Moose moved slowly out from under Blair’s desk. He whimpered and wagged his tail, then ran to Forge.

Lucas put his arm around Forge’s shoulders and steered him toward the stairs, clicking his fingers for Moose, who followed. “You’re colder than usual.”

As soon as they were up the stairs in the living room, Forge saw Blair on the couch, knees tucked under his chin, arms around his legs. Lucas sat him next to Blair, and Forge immediately gathered Blair in his arms and pulled him close. He was ridiculously relieved when Blair grabbed on, and bent his head to press his face against Forge’s shoulder. Never letting Blair out of his sight and never letting him go again was what Forge wanted; however, that was impractical. Blair couldn’t enlighten the young minds he taught with two hundred pounds of irritable vampire attached to him.

Lucas wrapped a blanket around the two of them and sat on the arm of the couch nearest Blair. Simon showed up with two cups of steaming liquid. He moved the coffee table back and crouched in front of them, holding one cup out to Forge. After he took it, Simon tapped Blair’s arm and said, “Blair, here, drink this. It fixes everything. I promise.”

Declan sat on Forge’s other side and rubbed his hand over Forge’s head before dropping his hands to his lap. He chuckled, and Forge relaxed. Tea was Simon’s cure for all disasters.

Some of you may have heard a little of how I started writing from my author bio, but it’s only brief. So here’s how it all started.

nana and meWhen I was a very little girl, my Nana (grandmother, pictured above with me aged 3) used to stay at mine and my parents’ house for a few days every Christmas. We didn’t have a spare bedroom so she slept on the couch and early in the mornings I’d go and wake her up, then sit under the blanket by her feet while she told me fantasy stories. I’m sure that was one of the main things to spark my imagination, as well as the fact that writing runs in the family, with my mother being a published poet.

From storytelling as a young child, I progressed to writing short stories from around age 8, using my mum’s old manual typewriter, one letter at a time. It started with little girls and ponies (I was a keen horse rider), and developed into very basic MF romances in my early teens. I won a writing competition in my English class at school when I was 12, and had the mortifying moment of being called up on stage in the drama hall to receive my prize. I was so embarrassed I couldn’t speak and just stood there laughing!

After a friend showed me the British gay romance movies, My Beautiful Laundrette, starring Daniel Day Lewis, my cheesy MF romances developed into MM romances, usually featuring my favorite rock stars – my own version of Fanfiction before I’d ever heard of it. Of course, no one ever saw these stories except me and I never dreamed of trying to publish anything at that stage.

My writing was pushed aside for a few years when I got married, as my husband and I traveled a lot and I read instead of putting pen to paper. But it soon resurfaced when I accidentally stumbled upon Fanfictions based on Once Upon A Time n Mexico, a movie I loved at the time. I wrote a couple of my own, then branch into other fandoms such as Predator, Dr. Quinn, True Women and eventually… *cough* Twilight. Yes, I love Twilight and I’m not ashamed to admit it. Nor am I ashamed of the fics I wrote based on it, because if it hadn’t been for my loyal readers and fellow writers of that fandom, I wouldn’t have made an effort to submit something to a publisher. Several of my friends gave me a bit of a kick up the proverbial and encouraged me to try and be an original published writer.

The rest, as they say, is history. Beautiful Thunder is my fourth published novel, and there are four short stories and two novellas in between. Hopefully many more to come.
