Hawks & Rams release party – meet the characters

January 1, 2015

Hawks & Rams is an adventure as well as a romance. The story is set on the borderlands between two fantasy kingdoms. One of them was recently conquered by an empire and the other kingdom promptly closed its borders in self-defense. The borderlands are patrolled by Rangers who keep an eye out for illegal crossings. Adal Sperling is one of these Rangers.

The Archer

Adal is an excellent archer and as long as he’s a good Ranger the gossips in town will go easy on him — his mother has been trying to find a wife for Adal for years, but he’s some kind of cold fish that can’t even get it up for a pretty girl. Which is a shame.

The first word of the thieves is that they’ve stabbed a shepherd and stolen his flock. Adal and his brother-in-law are the first Rangers in hot pursuit of the thieves, but everything goes straight downhill from there.

I always felt bad about Adal’s situation. He’s not a complicated guy. He just wants to work hard, do a good job, and be appreciated but Adal ended up being miserable for years because he’s too honest to fake an interest in women. He’s also too shy to talk about what he does want.

Adal’s eyes were always easy for me to see. The rest of his face took longer to settle in. I eventually found a picture that fit him fairly well.

Sometimes I collect gifs that illustrate a character’s personality. Here are a couple that I found for Adal. Do you know people like this?

Heathric Felahóf never wanted to be a thief, but his cousinʼs scheme is the only option to keep the town’s children from being taken as slaves to cover the year’s taxes. So a few men slip over the border into the neighboring kingdom, steal a flock of sheep, and escape before the magically gifted Rangers learn of them. The second time, they’re not so lucky, and trouble follows the bandits home.

Adal Sperling has given up on finding a lover who truly wants him. One of the Rangers charged with protecting his people, he pursues the sheep thieves over the border and stumbles across Heathric, a gentle shepherd who only wants to take care of his family. But opposite sides of border incursions is a rough way to fall in love, and the laws of Adalʼs kingdom are clear: the border must remain closed to Heathricʼs people.

Hawks & Rams release party — excerpt

January 1, 2015

From Chapter 1

The meadow, sheep, and herding dogs looked familiar enough to Heathric, but the shepherds spoke the wrong language. He and his cousins crouched behind a knot of birches, waiting for Dunstan and Scéot to flank the field and shoot the dogs. Mother Love only knew what would happen then; folk on this side of the border hills were all kir-mages, it was said. Their saints made them, even if they were born without the gift.

One of the dogs leaped up from the tall grass, ears cocked toward the trees at the edge of the meadow. Heathric’s breath caught. The dog faced away from him, though. It had to be one of the two woodsmen. The elder shepherd noticed his dog and stood up too. His son, red-haired like him, called a question.

An arrow hissed. The dog cried out and fell. Heathric winced, squeezing his eyes shut. The second dog barked once and squealed in pain. It stabbed through Heathric’s ears and pricked tears to his eyes.

“Come on!” Athard cuffed Heathric as he rushed past. Athard whistled to his own dog, and a bark answered from the forest behind them.

Heathric took a breath to steady himself. It had to be done, or the strangers’ dogs would attack their own. He whistled the order to come and heard Clymp tearing through the ferns toward him.

Lunging to his feet, Heathric charged into the meadow with his shepherd’s staff in both hands. Wails from the dying dog hit his ears, along with men’s shouts. The sheep baaed and dithered under all the noise, some of them frightened enough to bolt toward the tree line. Heathric whistled a flanking command to Clymp and called the sheep together.

They didn’t know Suevi words, though, and he was a stranger. A gray and white mop of a dog burst from the forest and the sheep shied in unison toward Heathric. He spread his arms, with the staff held out long, to turn them back to the main flock. They veered away, crashing into their flock-mates in confusion.

Behind them, ounstan raised his bow as a club and struck the shepherd down. Heathric saw his cousin’s rage, clear as day, and felt it hot and prickly as a sunburn across his skin.

Running sheep caught his eye, and Heathric whistled again. Clymp raced past to herd them back. “Easy, easy,” Heathric said, pacing along the edge of the flock with his arms wide. “We won’t hurt you.”

The animals’ eyes rolled, and they bumped against each other in trying to huddle. Beyond, Dunstan clubbed the shepherd again, then put his hand on the hilt of the seax he wore strapped across the small of his back. The knife’s long, heavy blade flashed in the sun as he jerked it from the scabbard.

“No!” It burst from Heathric’s mouth.

Dunstan stabbed. Heathric broke into a run, hurdling the sheep that couldn’t scramble out of his way.

“No! You swore—!”

Dunstan swung around with the bloody seax at ready. Heathric skidded to a stop, barely keeping his balance. His cousin snorted and flicked blood off the blade. “No harm’ll come to us.” He put a sneering emphasis on the last word.

A little about me:

L. Blankenship started writing animal stories as a kid and it’s just gotten completely out of hand since then. Now she’s out publishing her gritty fantasy and hard science fiction adventures. L grew up in New Hampshire but currently lives near Washington, DC.

Graduate of Viable Paradise, 2011. Self-publishing since November 2012.

I have a book blog and a writing blog, a Facebook page, and a Twitter where I post my daily word count when I’m writing. There’s also a mailing list for announcements and sneak peeks.

So for New Year’s Eve I celebrated the first anniversary of a new habit of mine: enjoying electronic music in local clubs. I had loved the music for a long time, but being a shy person I had never gone out to see deejays in person. NYE 2013, I fixed that and it became a habit. I had a lot of fun over the summer going to festivals and meeting local deejays who are trying to earn a few bucks doing something they love. I can relate to that as an author.

Did you do something new for NYE? Have any of your New Year’s resolutions turned out to be great?

Wild and Precious Release Party #6 – Sexy Excerpt: Brent Gets Brave

December 30, 2014

WildAndPrecious_headerbanner

So here’s the promised excerpt! At this point in the story, Brent has answered Cody’s personal ad in Match.com and they are meeting for the first time at Kramerbooks, in the Afterwords Cafe.

Yay, picture op!

kramerbooks3

When Brent walks in, Cody is stunned by his handsome face and “bangin’ body” and he’s stoked when Brent tells him he’s interested in “experimentation.” They sit at a table and talk. Then Brent takes a call from his brother, who is trying to set him up with yet another woman. We pick up the story from Cody’s POV as Brent is on the phone. The scene directly following this one is in Brent’s apartment and from Brent’s POV.

***********

As Brent talked, he ran his eyes over Cody’s body, and Cody’s fingers twitched.

“Sorry. Make up some excuse. I’ll catch you later, bro.” Brent turned off the phone. “You know, I set up getting together with my brother tonight in case this turned out to be a disaster.”

“I figured.”

“But, um, I’m enjoying this.”

Cody’s heart gave a thump. Brent was so damn pretty when he blushed. “Me, too. Wanna take this party elsewhere? There’s some good clubs around. Maybe I can help you do some research for that Georgetown article.”

“Okay. Good. I’ve got a few we can go check out. Or—” and then he stopped, looking uncertain.

Cody leaned forward, his fingers brushing against Brent’s. “Or?”

“You could come to my place, and I could show you that story I was telling you about.”

Cody sat back and smiled. This whole evening was going way beyond his expectations. The bi-curious straight boy was looking at him with heat in his eyes and inviting him home.

“I’d love to.”

Brent opened the door to his apartment, feeling sweat trickling from his armpits, and invited Cody in. He moved to pick up the newspapers and shirts littering the sofa.

“Sorry, I wasn’t expecting guests.” Oh, great, that sounded lame.

“No problem.” Cody glanced around, then walked over to the bookcase and started checking out the books.

“You do that, too?” Brent asked. “When I’m in someone’s place for the first time, I go right to the bookcase to see what they read.” And now I’m babbling. “Um, can I get you something to drink? I have some beer.”

Cody straightened up and leaned against the bookshelf, shaking his head. Tall and buff in his tight jeans and form-fitting shirt, Cody was really quite… something. Sexy. That was the word for it.

Brent’s mouth grew dry when Cody walked over with a purposeful stride and stopped in front of him. He took Brent’s hand—Brent hoped his palm wasn’t too clammy—and sat down on the couch, pulling Brent to sit down beside him. “So.”

Cody’s blue eyes were warm, but despite his friendliness, Brent’s stomach roiled. He let go of Cody’s hand. “So.” Wincing at the hoarseness in his voice, he wiped his palms surreptitiously on his jeans.

“You’ve never been with a man before.” It was a statement, not a question.

“Right.” Brent began to lick his lips, then pulled his tongue back into his mouth, embarrassed. He lowered his eyes. Cody put his hand on Brent’s knee and zing. A pang of desire shot through Brent’s dread.

“You still interested in experimenting?” Cody asked, and squeezed his knee.

Brent was finding it hard to breathe. Wasn’t he supposed to be showing Cody his story? Then damn Mary Oliver chimed in on the proceedings, asking him how he was doing on living a wild and precious life.

Fuck it. He turned to face Cody. “Yes.”

Cody leaned in and kissed him, lips warm, and Brent was surprised by the stubble grazing his chin. Pulled forward by Cody’s strong, assertive hands, he felt Cody’s hard bicep when he grasped his arm for balance. Head swimming at Cody’s undeniable masculinity, Brent opened his mouth to Cody’s exploring tongue, gasping as Cody pulled on his lower lip with his teeth and then sucked on it. Cody ran a hand under Brent’s shirt, calloused fingers stroking his back, while the other came down squarely on the front of Brent’s jeans and pressed against his cock.

Brent jumped, then opened his legs and pushed back against Cody’s hand, fire spreading through his groin, head falling back against the sofa. Cody moved his mouth to Brent’s neck and sucked, hard, all the while keeping a rhythmic pressure against his cock. Brent’s breath came in short gasps, and he raked his fingers down Cody’s back as a moan escaped his lips.

******************

We’ll leave it there for now, because I’m a tease, but I promise you the scene does continue!

I shall return in a bit to wrap up our wonderful party and let you in on my blog tour and what’s next.

Wild and Precious Release Party #5 – Let’s Talk Characters

December 30, 2014

WildAndPrecious_headerbanner

Okay! Thanks so much for all the participation. I’m having so much fun hearing from you! I want to tell you more about the story, so let’s talk about the main characters.

WildAndPrecious_postcard_front_DSP

There are three central characters in Wild and Precious.

BRENT: Brent is the main character and much of the book is told from his point of view. He’s a straight(ish) boy from Kentucky who has a dream of being a writer, and he feels lucky to have landed a great job at an arts magazine in WDC. Brent is self-effacing and doesn’t realize how attractive or talented he is. He wants someone to love, but can’t seem to get interested in any of the women his friend Ari keeps setting him up with. He’s a little lost about what he’s doing with his one wild and precious life! I love Brent because he keeps stepping beyond his comfort zone. I mean, for him to answer a personal ad for male seeking male after a life of thinking he’s straight is pretty darn bold. And then once he and Cody meet, Brent is the one who invites Cody home. It takes him time to get the courage to come out to his friends and family, but he finally does. He also finally goes for it regarding being a writer. He could have played it safe and kept his good job at the arts magazine but he takes the scary step to get himself into a graduate program in creative writing because that’s where his heart lies.

CODY: Cody is a likeable character indeed. Some of the book is told from his point of view. He’s bisexual, easygoing, and loves to have new adventures. When the story starts, he’s been dating several women, having broken off his engagement a year earlier. He decides it’s time to get back on the gay side of his spectrum and enlists the help of his friends Bette and Aurora to write a male seeking male personal ad. Cody is a musician who plays at clubs around the area. He prides himself on his independence and isn’t looking to tie himself down, especially not to a “bi-curious straight boy”, as his friends call Brent. But Cody finds himself getting more and more attached to Brent. Plus he’s having a great time initiating Brent into the world of gay sex! Cody’s essential nature is sweet and supportive and he’s patient with Brent’s confusion and hesitation about owning their relationship. Ultimately, Cody knows when things aren’t right, either for him or for Brent, and he has the courage to be honest about it. I believe we’ll get more of Cody’s story in the future.

GRAHAM: Graham is a man who appears to have it all. Here’s his description in the beginning of the book: “Graham Stoneford, editor-in-chief of Washington/Arts magazine, was considered something of a wunderkind at age thirty to be running a successful magazine and website devoted to the arts in the nation’s capital. He dressed to kill, was photographed at parties of the young Washington elite, and was openly, unabashedly gay. He also happened to be stunningly handsome, charming, and articulate.” We don’t hear the story from Graham’s point of view, only seen through the lens of Brent’s admiration. But Graham is a great guy, an inspiring boss who sees the good in his employees, fun, talented… okay, does he have ANY faults? Well, he’s a bit of a control freak, which is a good trait to have for running a magazine. But he’s also a bit sad and scared underneath that charming exterior, especially after his longtime boyfriend dumps him halfway through the story. Brent touches him and Graham allows himself to be vulnerable. And he’s a huge romantic. I just love Graham.

Question time: How about you ask me questions about the characters, the story, the plot — anything that strikes your curiosity?

I’ll be back to answer them and after that I have a sexy excerpt from the story. Stay tuned…

Wild and Precious Release Party #4 – The Movie Inspiration

December 30, 2014

WildAndPrecious_headerbanner

Wild and Precious came out of a prompt in an m/m writing community, to re-imagine a movie as an m/m romance.

The movie I chose was Kissing Jessica Stein.

kissing jessica poster

It’s a cute movie written by and starring Jennifer Westfeldt as a neurotic Jewish girl in New York City who tires of trying to find a man and instead decides to try out being with a woman. The woman, Helen, played by Heather Juergensen, is bisexual and a free spirit (and incredibly sexy – that’s her below on the left).

jessicaandhelen

Jessica and Helen start a relationship but Jessica isn’t comfortable with friends and family knowing about it. She finally does come out to her family but some time after that Helen breaks up with her because Jessica isn’t really into the relationship. Jessica is also confronting how she’s sold out on her true passion, which is being an artist. In the end, Jessica appears to be heading toward a hetero relationship with her former boss and she’s fully embraced her life as an artist.

So what about Wild and Precious?

I had fun casting my story with straight (Brent), bisexual (Cody), and gay (Graham) men, and adding the plot twist that Brent not only explores being with another man, but in doing so discovers he truly is gay. A lot of elements in my story differ and one is the quotation that Cody puts in his Match.com ad that attracts Brent’s attention. In the movie, it’s a Rilke quote that Helen’s friends make her put in her ad – one which Jessica happened to have read recently and liked. In Wild and Precious, it’s the quote from the Mary Oliver poem that draws Brent to Cody’s ad.

The other major difference is the importance to Brent of his relationship with boss and mentor, Graham. While that is hinted at in the movie, in my story it’s this relationship that truly moves and inspires Brent… and the last part of the story is the sweet and romantic happy ending between these two characters.

Wild and Precious Release Party #2 – Location Love

December 30, 2014

WildAndPrecious_headerbanner

I love setting my stories in the cool places I used to live. Having grown up in the Washington, DC area, it’s always fun to revisit neighborhoods, restaurants, museums, and clubs I used to frequent as a teen and twenty-something adult.

Dupont Circle

Dupont_Circle_(WMATA_station)

Dupont Circle is one of DC’s traffic circles with a cool park inside (people play chess by the fountain) and historic neighborhoods, clubs, and restaurants on the surrounding streets. It’s a great area to live and work. In the story, Brent and Graham work at an arts magazine with its office in one of the historic buildings right off the Circle.

Kramerbooks and Afterwords Café

kramerbooks3

This independent bookstore and cafe is a Dupont Circle treasure. I hung out here during late-night adventures as a twenty-something, and was so happy to find it’s still going. This is the setting for Brent’s and Cody’s first meeting, and I have Brent return with his boss Graham. It’s right up the street from the magazine’s office.

Eastern Market

marketoutside

The Eastern Market is an indoor/outdoor flea market and farmer’s market located on Capitol Hill. According to www.easternmarket-dc.org, the Eastern Market building is designated as a National Historic Landmark and the market had been in continuous operation since 1873. This is the setting for an interesting encounter between Brent and Cody, after they run into Brent’s close friends, Ari and Lexie.

The DC Skyline

Washington-DC-skyline

The DC skyline is fabulous and I knew I wanted it on the cover of Wild and Precious. This is from the point of view of looking at DC from Arlington, across the Potomac. We’re to imagine there is some hotel with this view from its terrace, which is where I placed THE pivotal scene in the story. The cover shows Graham standing on the terrace looking at the skyline while Cody and Brent link hands behind him. I laughed later because I realized that the arms of Brent and Cody are bare, and this scene takes place in winter. Oh well, so much for realism! I still think it’s a great cover. Here it is again:

WildAndPrecious_postcard_front_DSP

I don’t want to overload this post with pictures, but here are some of the other locations mentioned in the story: Adams Morgan, another cool DC neighborhood; The Birchmere, a music venue in the Del Ray section of Alexandria; Jammin’ Java, another music venue located in Vienna, Virginia; Fauquier County, Virginia, where rich people with horses live; the Hirschhorn, a gallery of modern art on the DC Mall; Cape Charles, Virginia, a charming and historic town on the Chesapeake Bay.
