Bi the Way w/ Grace R. Duncan

bi the way

One of the things I like to have in my stories is bisexual characters. I’m bi. I know quite a few bi people and I think we are often overlooked in LGBT fiction. We focus so much on the male/male aspect of the relationship—the current relationship—we don’t often think about previous relationships and what those might mean.

In No Sacrifice, it was central to the story, so that wasn’t something I could have skipped over if I wanted to. There’s even a—gasp—het sex scene! It’s limited, but it’s on page. I heard quite a bit about that scene too.

While No Sacrifice was obvious, some of my other stories with bisexual characters weren’t. Healing and Overcoming Fear have a bi character—Mark, the former nurse. It caused some serious issues with his late wife, but it wasn’t exactly his defining characteristic or a major focal point of the story. Even Miles in Acceptance, who is also bisexual, mentions it, but that’s about all. There’s no real discussion about it. I felt it was important, though, to not overly focus on it. Yes, he’s bi, and it’s a part of his character, but I didn’t want it to be the defining characteristic. It just was. I didn’t want to make a bigger deal out of it than that.

When Eric first prodded me about a story for him, I was actually puzzled. I’d thought he was straight. No kidding. I mean, yeah, I have some control over my characters, but sometimes they tell me what they are, whether I want them to or not. :P Eric had been mated to a woman, and in my head, I’d had him more or less firmly straight. But he apparently wasn’t done with me and I realized along the way that Eric had a lot more going on in his head—and heart—than I thought.

That meant I had to step back and give real thought to him and what that meant for his story. If he was bi, is this the first time he’s realizing it? Or is there more to it than that? Has he known for a while? How long?

Eric couldn’t take it easy on me, could he? Contrary little pup, that’s for sure. But he’d been through a lot and I wanted to see him have his own HEA.

Ben was a bit different. He’d been closeted his whole life. I knew this from the start, in part because of his Catholic mother. Even if she hadn’t had issues with his wolf, she’d have had issues with his bisexuality. So, he kept it hidden. His father knew, but his mother? Yeah, right. This was part of what led him to having a girlfriend in high school. She wasn’t exactly a beard—they did care about each other—but certainly not love each other and neither wanted to bond. Still, he was a lot easier to figure out and deal with than Eric was.

Sometimes, I think it’s important to make a character’s sexuality obvious. Sometimes it’s important—like Patrick in No Sacrifice and Mark in Healing—and Eric here. His bisexuality had a lot to do with the choices he made and the paths he took. Ben, Miles, and a few others weren’t as important, but I still wanted to make sure the readers knew that they were bi. I want folks to remember there’s more than just gay and straight and sometimes those other orientations can have a huge impact on a person.

Thanks much for the chance to share my boys with you today!

Blurb:

Nine years ago Eric Joyce went wolf when his chosen mate broke the bond, and he hasn’t walked on two legs since. Convinced he lost his friends when he ran out on them, he cut himself off from the pack. But a surprising visitor prods him back down the mountain, and he finds himself welcomed warmly.

Ben Arellano grew up in Texas with a human, Catholic mother who didn’t understand a thing about wolves—and didn’t try to learn. He spent his whole life being told his wolf was a demon that needed to be exorcised, surrounded by a wolf pack made up of good ole boys who had no tolerance for his Mexican ancestry or his bisexuality. When he’s given the opportunity to relocate to an accepting pack in Pittsburgh, he jumps at the chance.

When Eric and Ben meet for the first time, neither is ready for it. Where Ben expects rejection, Eric is convinced yet another mate will leave, break the bond, and put him through the same hell all over again. Can they get past their reservations and have a happily mated life?

Author Bio:

Grace Duncan grew up with a wild imagination. She told stories from an early age – many of which got her into trouble. Eventually, she learned to channel that imagination into less troublesome areas, including fanfiction, which is what has led her to writing male/male erotica.

A gypsy in her own right, Grace has lived all over the United States. She has currently set up camp in East Texas with her husband and children – both the human and furry kind.

As one of those rare creatures who loves research, Grace can get lost for hours on the internet, reading up on any number of strange and different topics. She can also be found writing fanfiction, reading fantasy, crime, suspense, romance and other erotica or even dabbling in art.
