Just the Way You Are – Release Party. 8

April 18, 2015

Where to now? As usual, I can’t work on just one project at a time. I have a number of things running concurrently.

I’ve always been interested in Australian history and have often wondered what the Aboriginal people really thought when Europeans landed and decided their home was a good place for a penal colony. That’s inspired the novel I’m writing at the moment. It has three different timelines over two planets and two dimensions. Only one timeline is told chronologically so, after about 13000 words, I realised I’d have to plot ahead of writing it to make sure I don’t miss any important things. It’s coming along slowly. I’m enjoying writing out of my comfort zone, but struggling to make sure all the different and varied elements are connected strongly enough to hold the readers’ attention.

To help me get to know the characters in that story better, I wrote a short story about when two of them met. That story, Shattered Lives, has just been released in the Queermance Anthology II.Queermance-vol-2_S

I’ve been preparing for a virtual blog tour for Just the Way You Are with Pride Promotions and will be visiting lots of blogs. Check my blog for the program: www.eemontgomery.com/blog

Once I started getting involved in the dimension story, I realized I needed something a bit simpler to work on as a break for my brain. I’m writing very different SF story that’s inspired by random elements from American slavery, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Trek, Animal Farm, and an article I read a while ago on the circumstances under which people turn to cannibalism. It’s sort of a dystopian throwback society. Of course with all that swimming around inside my head, what was once a simple 5000 word short story target might end up something else entirely.

Meanwhile, I’m enjoying the release of Just the Way You Are. I’ve spent a lot of time working on this series and, while I’ve thoroughly enjoyed each story, I’m glad that it’s finished–I think–maybe. I keep thinking there’s a story there for one of Vaughn’s friends… Find Just the Way You Are at: http://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=6274

That’s a lot to have going on in your head. No wonder you have lists. So a question for you. How do you come up with your characters? Do they come to you fully formed or are tey based on real people that fit into your storyline

Sounds like you keep yourself busy :)

Angela: One of the reasons I write is so that I can sit on the back deck all afternoon and watch the clouds go by–and call it plotting. But, yes, I like to keep busy, and I like variety so I do a lot of things. There are times, though, that I really need to learn how to say ‘no’ to new projects.

Denise: I learn about my characters in much the same way I learn about people I meet. There’s an initial attraction, where I think to myself ‘you’re interesting. I want to know you better’. After that, I need to spend time with them. I do that, initially, by writing the story. At some point, I have to stop because I get stuck. That’s when I write character profiles and, if I’m really stuck I’ll do interviews with the characters or write a short story about a particular time in their life.

Some of my characters are based on real people although you’d never recognise them from real life because I mix bits in. For example, Neridah in Just the Way You Are has some personality traits that one of my sisters does, although I’ve exaggerated them greatly. Neridah is also a little like a lady I used to work with and she looks a bit like a lady I once saw sunbathing on the roof of her building (I was traumatised by that experience). Neridah’s smoking and the way she waves away her coughing is from yet another person I knew some years ago.
